Covid-19 in the UK: why cases are surging right now – Vox

A sandwich board outside a restaurant where there are outdoor tables and diners, reads, “10 pounds from Boris.”

For the plan, dubbed “Eat Out to Help Out,” the government paid half of everyone’s restaurant bills up to 10 pounds per meal every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in August — for all diners, in groups of any size, as often as people wanted, indoors or out. At the time, face masks were not required in most eating establishments. According to Boris Johnson and finance minister Rishi Sunak, the point of the plan was to help save jobs in the restaurant industry.

The public was more than happy to eat on the government’s dime and did so 100 million times between August 3 and 31, at a cost of £522 million (about $694 million), per Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, the IRS of the UK.

The public health community reacted to the plan with horror. “In a word, it’s nuts,” says Lawrence Gostin, director of the WHO Center on National and Global Health Law, professor of global health law at Georgetown University, and a research fellow at Oxford University. “In the midst of a pandemic, it’s actually directly opposite to what the public health evidence suggests.”

The move was made despite evidence available since early in the pandemic that eating indoors, close to others, is a high-risk activity for spreading the virus.

India-Israel ‘30-second coronavirus test’ should be ‘ready in days’ – The Jerusalem Post

The operation had been dubbed “Open Skies,” and Malka said he believes the testing kit will enable the world to begin opening the skies, since the technology simply requires a person to blow into a tube and the results become available in less than a minute. It is also very cheap to carry out, as the results are delivered locally without the logistics and cost of sending the sample to a lab.

Republican donor Elliott Broidy to plead guilty for foreign lobbying – The Jerusalem Post

Jho Low, a Malaysian national, paid Broidy, a former deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee and a vice-chairman of the finance committee of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, $6 million to influence a Justice Department investigation into a corruption scandal involving Low, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Broidy will enter his plea soon, the paper said, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Low, a fugitive believed to be living in China allegedly stole billions of dollars from a Malaysian development fund and is wanted in Malaysia, Singapore, and the United States. Broidy’s bid to tamp down the US investigation was unsuccessful.
In addition to attempts to get the Justice Department to scale back the investigation into Low, the charging document says Broidy at one point discussed with others plans to bring about the return to China from the United States Guo Wengui, a businessman who is wanted in China on criminal charges.
Broidy, who at one point was also on the board of the Republican Jewish Coalition, in 2018 made headlines when it emerged that he allegedly worked with George Nader, an American adviser to the United Arab Emirates, to influence US policy in opposition to Qatar.

More than 400 rabbis back tough New York social distancing measures – The Jerusalem Post

The statement, organized by the New York Jewish Agenda, a liberal Jewish advocacy group, expressed its support for New York’s use of “data-driven, geographically-based efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.”
The reference to “data-driven” efforts is aimed at pushing back at claims that Cuomo and de Blasio are singling out haredi Orthodox Jews with their most recent efforts to contain the spread of the virus. In April, the group organized a letter protesting what it said was de Blasio’s “scapegoating the Jewish community” with a series of tweets harshly criticizing the violating of social distancing guidelines at an Orthodox funeral in Brooklyn. This week’s statement emphasized that the current orders, spurred by a sharp uptick in infections, are not driven by bias.
“We condemn the lack of compliance with public health directives and recent violent reactions from some individuals within the Orthodox Jewish community to enforcement of those mandates,” the statement said.

Sonny Perdue endorsed Trump in official speech, violating the law

“We’ve never seen an outpouring of compassion like that for people who matter, because people matter to you,” Perdue said, speaking directly to Trump in the audience. “And that’s what’s important to me. And that’s what’s going to continue to happen—four more years—if America gets out and votes for this man, Donald J. Trump.”

Asked by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel to explain his comments, Perdue said he was describing the president’s past behavior and speculating on what he would do in the future if re-elected. Perdue said he had not encouraged anyone to vote a certain way.

The Special Counsel’s office determined that the remarks still ran afoul of the Hatch Act and directed him to reimburse the U.S. Treasury for the cost of the trip.

“Taken as a whole, Secretary Perdue’s comments during the August 24 event encouraged those present, and those watching remotely, to vote for President Trump’s reelection,” the report said. “His first words were not about USDA, but about the president’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns.”

If Perdue pays the fine, the case will be closed. However, the Special Counsel’s letter said any further violations could result in more serious action.
