Government seeks new powers to limit movement – Radio Sweden | Sveriges Radio – Covid-19 related

The government wants to introduce new temporary legislation giving them powers to limit people’s rights to visit beaches, use public transport and shopping centres in order to stop the spread of corona.

The proposed law may infringe on freedoms protected by the constitution, including freedom of movement, so Health Minister Lena Hallengren says they must be careful about how it is brought in, and this means the proposed law won’t be introduced until summer 2021.

Tuberculosis breakthrough as scientists develop risk prediction tool | Global health | The Guardian

“If we can identify people at highest risk of TB disease, we can treat their infection with preventive antibiotics, before they become unwell,” said Dr Rishi Gupta, author of the paper. “Current tests to predict who will develop active TB are not very accurate. The risk of becoming unwell with TB among people with a positive test also depends on many factors – our study highlights the fact that young children, people recently exposed to TB and individuals with ‘higher’ positive test results have a significantly higher risk of developing TB disease.”

Trump has become obsessed with toilets. Is it because he is a busted flush? | Donald Trump | The Guardian

Why is Trump so obsessed with toilets? One imagines Freud would have had a theory or two. My own, very simple, explanation is that the guy is potty; he has worms in his brain and something horrible in his gut. Interestingly, however, Trump seems particularly bothered by bathroom issues during tough times. His 2019 rants were delivered as impeachment proceedings started. His latest loo-natic monologue was delivered with the election just weeks away, Joe Biden leading in the polls, and the number of people with coronavirus surging across the US. Is he subconsciously showing us he’s worried his career is about to get flushed down the toilet? Let’s hope so and let’s hope it happens: it’s time to dump Trump. Texas schools tell teachers with medical risks to return to classrooms | The Texas Tribune (No heart or empathy is epidemic in Texas?)

A school counselor at the Houston-based Windmill Lakes campus at the International Leadership of Texas charter school, Tucker talked to her doctor about the risks she and her child would face if she were to contract COVID-19 from students or other employees. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that pregnant people may be at an increased risk of severe COVID-19 illness, or even preterm birth. At her doctor’s recommendation, Tucker turned in a note asking her school if she could work remotely.

School leaders denied that request, saying she would have to return to work in person in September. If not, Tucker would have to use the rest of her paid leave to remain home, leaving her no time to recover after the baby’s birth. Her options quickly dwindling and her baby due in January, Tucker lawyered up and filed a grievance with the school district.
