Chauvin still faces the more serious charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter. Cahill also ruled against dismissing the aiding and abetting charges of Kueng, Lane and Thao.
Cahill has yet to decide on whether the four officers will be tried together in a single trial and if the trial will take place outside of Hennepin County.
An arbitration court in the Sverdlovsk region has fined the Ural Instrument Making Plant 500,000 rubles ($6,500) for manufacturing faulty equipment after federal regulators discovered violations of licensing requirements in the production, maintenance, and circulation of medical devices.
Russia’s Military Court of Appeal has upheld sentences of between 6 and 18 years against seven young left-wing activists from Penza. Although there is nothing unusual in today’s Russia about political trials on fabricated charges, this case did stand out since the men were all charged with involvement in a supposed ‘terrorist’ organization that never existed. The fictitious nature of the so-called ‘Network’ [«Сеть»] was just one of the eery echoes from the height of Stalin’s Terror in 1937 era in this case. open licenses and pledges are only the beginning of the discussion about how we can remove legal obstacles to sharing urgently needed innovation. As we’ve discussed before, one way is to harness the power of existing patent law. There’s a provision that lets the US government use or authorize others to use any invention “described in and covered by a patent of the United States” in exchange for reasonable compensation. In other words, the government could license itself or others to use any patented technology to diagnose, treat, or stop the spread of COVID-19. (If a patent-owner wanted to sue for infringement, it would sue the United States, not the licensee.) The government can do that under current law, with no need to get a bill through legislative gridlock. But that’s not enough either. Rising to the many challenges facing society today requires going to the source—how scientific research is funded and published as well as the legal entanglements that can come with that research. The good news is that the open access community has made progress. Although Congress has failed multiple times to pass a comprehensive open access law, current Executive Branch policies require that
This newsletter/post by Dr. Sharon Blackie came through at such a synchronous moment for me — a series of reassurances that began with a dream and continued to unfold for over an hour. It’s a beautiful, encouraging post in these times of certain change and uncertain outcomes. Highly recommended, affirming post. You can read it […]
As Yanomami spokesperson Davi Kopenawa says in the chapter “Metal Smoke” of his book “The Fall from the Sky”: “This is what our elders say who are great shamans. These are the words of the xapiri, which they convey to us. These are the ones I want white people to hear. … Once the artisanal miners got to our house … They soiled the rivers with yellowish mud and filled them with xawara epidemic fumes from their machines. I saw them ravage the sources of the river with the greed of hungry dogs. All this to find gold, so that the whites can use it to make teeth and adornments or keep it locked in their homes.… The thinking of these whites is clouded by their greed for gold. They are evil beings. ”
Well yesterday the government hit an all time low. Not only have they purposely neglected to protect the public from Covid 19, they’re now allowing our children to become hungry. As a covid 19 sufferer I know exactly how vicious this virus can be. Thousands have does from it and the secondary infections that follow. […]
Yesterday a motion was put forward in parliament to ensure that all children would receive free school meals in the autumn and Christmas holidays.
Despite putting up a good fight, Tory MPs voted it down. They don’t care if our children are hungry, not do they care if we die from Covid 19.
Boris Johnson’s cruel, evil Government voted down a motion which would have prevented a million kids going hungry over the half term & Christmas holidays.
This is proof that they don’t care and will never care. Some Tory MPs are disgusted in their behaviour as are some ex Tory MPs.
The fact is that the Tory party has always been cruel and judgemental. They believe that the working class person is responsible for their own poverty, and they fail to acknowledge that they are the ones responsible for this.
On Thursday, Germany reported 11,200 new cases, a new daily record of cases since the pandemic began. It is a sharp jump over the previous day when 7,830 cases were reported. Thirty people died on Thursday.
Germany, like other European countries have been experiencing a surge in cases for several weeks. This prompted German authorities to increase coronavirus measures such as a ban of large gatherings. In Berlin, individuals are forced to wear a mask even outside. A press conference is expected on Thursday.
Robert Koch Institute (RKI) chief, Lothan Wieler blamed the surge in cases on private gatherings:

Japanese reaearchers led by Professor Kawaoka Yoshihiro at the University of Tokyo found that masks offers protection against coronavirus, but not perfectly. There are ways, where coronavirus particles could still manage to pass through, even if the masks are professional-grade.
Reserchers built a secure chamber to test the masks’ ability to block the coronavirus. In the chamber, two mannequins were placed with a mask on, facing each other. To one of the mannequins, a nebulizer was attached to its head, to simulate coughing and release actual coronavirus particles. The other mannequin was used to mimick natural breathing, having a collection chamber which can collect the virus, if it manages to pass through the mask, and into the airway.
A cotton mask blocked 40% of the coronavirus particles, when compared to no mask. An N95 mask, which is usually…
