As COVID-19 gains steam, virus tied to another White House cluster | CIDRAP

With cases accelerating quickly—and putting pressure on some hospitals—during the nation’s third surge in infections, a top White House official raised eyebrows this weekend when he said the nation couldn’t control COVID-19, which has now triggered an outbreak among the vice president’s staff.

Weekly numbers set record

Over the past week, the United States has averaged about 68,767 cases a day, the highest yet during the pandemic, according to an analysis by CNBC based on Johns Hopkins data. The country’s daily totals topped 83,000 cases on Oct 23 and Oct 24.

Hospitalizations, which typically lag spikes in cases, increased 40% over the past month, and currently about 41,000 Americans are hospitalized with COVID-19 infections, the New York Times reports.

Karidopita / Καρυδοπιτα

hard to resist – too much for me but recommend to others.

Enogastronomista

Karidopita. A mouthwatering , dark, spice scented walnut pie. Widespread throughout Greece, it is one of the oldest and most traditional Greek desserts. Scented with cinnamon and gloves, almost always served with a ball of ice cream, it has a flavor that is not easily forgotten.

The recipe varies slightly from one region to another, so it can be found with some small variations such as adding rum or cognac in the dough.

CDC Says Nurses Are at High Risk for Covid-19 – The New York Times

Ms. Mahon criticized federal officials for not having more robust guidelines in place. Her organization, which issued a report on workers’ deaths last month, says about 2,000 health care workers have so far died from the virus.

She says that workers should be tested more frequently so they can be identified and isolated so the infection does not spread, and that supplies of protective gear remain uneven, with some facilities unprepared for an increase in cases.

Even though workers may be taking more precautions and treatments have improved in recent months, the analysis underscored how vulnerable many individuals are because of underlying health conditions, which include diabetes and high blood pressure. Almost three-quarters of those hospitalized were obese, a high-risk category for death, the study showed.

The majority had cared directly for patients, whether in a hospital, home or school setting. It could not be determined whether the individuals contracted the virus at work or in the community, but the study highlighted the potential risk faced by nurses who serve as front-line workers “because of their frequent and close patient contact, leading to extended cumulative exposure time.”

“Region 10, on the other hand, is the first region in Illinois to earn additional mitigations not because of its positivity rate alone, but because its positivity rate and its COVID-related hospitalizations have both seen a sustained increase over the last 10 days.”
