Putin Orders New National Mask Mandate as Russia Sees Second COVID-19 Spike

Vladimir Putin on Tuesday made his most direct intervention yet to stave off a second wave of novel coronavirus infections by reintroducing a national mask mandate in Russia, The New York Times reports. Masks will reportedly be mandatory in public places like public transport, parking garages, and anywhere where more than 50 people can gather. Since the end of Russia’s first nationwide lockdown, Putin has delegated pandemic measures to regional leaders, so the new mandate marks a change in his government’s thinking. It came as Russia recorded more than 16,000 new cases five days in a row. Source: Putin Orders New National Mask Mandate as Russia Sees Second COVID-19 Spike

Joe Biden will make a great president; here’s why – opinion – The Jerusalem Post

Steve Rabinowitz with Joe Biden in the White House, 2015. (photo credit: DAVID LIENEMANN) Vice President Biden has for decades stood with Israel, combated antisemitism, and fought for the same sense of social justice I learned in shul and at home. As president, he will continue to safeguard the Jewish state, the Jewish people, Jewish values, and guarantee the unbreakable support of the United States.

And you know what? After more than 45 years in and out of Washington, I believe him.

We Jews always want to know which candidate has Jews closest to him. His kids or grandkids, his running mate or their spouse, his most senior staff. Who visited a synagogue? Met again with a bunch of mainstream Jewish leaders or built a sukkah in his backyard by the pool. Well, Jewish values course through the heart of Joe Biden’s own candidacy, campaign, and career. His presidency will personify the best of our faith tradition, as has his entire career. Source: Joe Biden will make a great president; here’s why – opinion – The Jerusalem Post

Avian Flu Diary: REACT Study: Coronavirus Antibody Prevalence Falling in England

Declining antibodies raise concerns over the potential for reinfection with the virus, and over just how long protection from a vaccine might last. The level and duration of antibody detection appears to correlate with disease severity, with milder cases declining faster than severe cases. Senator Perdue’s Willful Mispronunciation of Harris’ Name Is Foul Bigotry

What Perdue is doing is called “othering” – it is a means to convey the message, “Those people are not like us. We are the way people are supposed to be. Those people have peculiar names, peculiar behaviors, and/or abnormal skin or hair color. They don’t really belong here.”

By being dismissive of Kamala Harris’ name and trying to “other” her, Perdue is tapping into one of the favorite tropes of white supremacists: the slogan “You will not replace us.” This chant was heard at the violent 2017 Unite the Right event in Charlottesville.

American white supremacists assert that the Black population of the United States and Central or South American or Muslim immigrants are trying to replace “traditional” white Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) culture with their “alien” culture. Such arguments have evolved into “replacement theory,” which is popular with the far-right in several countries.

Nowadays, white Protestant men in positions of power strive to retain that power by asserting that the “they” of this world are women, people of color, Spanish-speakers, Muslims, Jews, immigrants, or anyone other than WASP men. When I was young, often the “they” included Roman Catholics. I remember the ire directed against the presidential candidacy of John F. Kennedy in 1960 for having the temerity to be an Irish Catholic running for the nation’s highest office.

Amy Coney Barrett’s appointment is a wake-up call for female voters | Amy Coney Barrett | The Guardian

It’s not only Roe v Wade that’s on the line under a Barrett court. Paid leave, affordable childcare, equal pay, voting rights, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ equality are in jeopardy. And with arguments on the Affordable Care Act slated for 10 November, Barrett may have the chance to repeal critical health care protections in the middle of a pandemic. At a time when we’ve just passed the grim threshold of 8 million Americans infected with Covid-19 and more than 225,000 dead, making it harder to get healthcare is the last thing we should be doing.

It’s outrageous that an impeached president who lost the popular vote can install a supreme court justice who would gut the Affordable Care Act despite majority support for the law – a law that made it so that women can no longer be charged more for health coverage because of our gender, or denied insurance because of a pre-existing condition such as breast cancer. It’s equally outrageous to see Republican senators prioritizing this bad-faith confirmation process despite their failure to pass a desperately-needed coronavirus relief bill. But none of this is surprising. Barrett’s nomination is part of a broader effort by the extreme right to allow minority views to rule over the will of the majority of Americans – in this case, women.

Fighting an Uphill Senate Re-election Battle, Doug Jones Does It His Way – The New York Times

“Somebody’s got to speak out,” Mr. Jones said of his decision to publicly address the movement. “And if you base the calculation only on whether it will win you an election, then you will never, ever do it.”

“That’s the problem that I’ve seen with so many Democrats from the South: The calculation was based not on helping the state or the country, but whether or not it helps the particular election,” he continued. “This is a much bigger issue than one Senate election in the state of Alabama.”
