Coronavirus: DeWine announces 21-day curfew starting Thursday

The curfew does not apply people going to and from work, anyone getting groceries or picking up takeout, going to the hospital or picking up medicine, DeWine said.

“The goal is to have fewer contacts,” he said. “The whole idea is if you can slow these contacts down it will go a long way in slowing this virus down.”

Night Owl Poetry - Dorinda Duclos

Child
Who is
Reflected
On the water
Bares her soul aloud
In the silence of night
As barren trees listen, watch
Her attention lies far away
Scattered thoughts unleash a roaring din
She wonders if the birds can hear them, too

US vets with COVID-related kidney injury at 6.7 times risk of death | CIDRAP

COVID-19 patients with AKI (acute kidney injury) were 6.5 times more likely than their peers to require mechanical ventilation and stay in the hospital an additional 5.6 days. They were also 6.7 times more likely to die of their illness, a link that was particularly strong in blacks. Of the 832 veterans with coronavirus who died, 559 (34%) had AKI, compared with 273 (8%) of those who didn’t.

Two-hundred-one of 1,655 patients with AKI (12%) required kidney replacement treatments such as dialysis. But during the study period, rates of AKI fell from 40% to 27%, and numbers needing kidney replacement therapy declined from 44% to 17%.

There was significant geographic variation in rates of AKI, ranging from 10% to 56%, with higher rates seen in areas in which hospitals cared for higher proportions of black veterans. The authors said that the proportion of black patients explained 31% of the geographical variation in AKI rates and 49% of the variation over time.

COVID-19 Event Risk Assessment Planning Tool

This map shows the risk level of attending an event, given the event size and location.

You can reduce the risk that one case becomes many by wearing a mask, distancing, and gathering outdoors in smaller groups

The risk level is the estimated chance (0-100%) that at least 1 COVID-19 positive individual will be present at an event in a county, given the size of the event. Source: COVID-19 Event Risk Assessment Planning Tool

lovely Uganda

I marvel at the beauty of Uganda. Her people are also very industrious. The cars (top picture) are used for meeting places out of the sun. Children also get out of the heat and pretend they are driving even when the cars are stacked on top of each other – think of the view.

Thank you Cee Neuner for a community where photographers share beauty and life… This week’s prompt is cream or white colour.

‘They Watch Us Closely’: Black Students Describe Patterns Of Racial Profiling By USC Police: LAist

The stories told by Black students and alumni include repeated instances of being stopped on campus by DPS officers and asked to show identification, often while standing next to white students who were not asked to do the same. Students and alumni noted multiple instances in which parties and events with primarily Black crowds were shut down more often and quicker than parties attended by mostly non-Black students. All told, these stories reflect a disturbing, years-long trend of DPS officers allegedly targeting Black students.
