Remdesivir combo reduces COVID-19 recovery time | CIDRAP

A combination of the antiviral drug remdesivir and the anti-inflammatory drug baricitinib reduced recovery time and accelerated improvement, especially among patients receiving supplemental oxygen without invasive ventilation, according to a large, international study of hospitalized COVID-19 patients published in the New England Journal of Medicine today.

Severe COVID-19 appears to be associated with an exaggerated inflammatory response in some patients, leading researchers to consider anti-inflammatory medications like baricitinib as potential therapies. Remdesivir, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on Oct 22 to treat hospitalized COVID patients, has thus far met with mixed results when used alone.

Researchers at 67 trial sites in eight countries, including the United States, randomly assigned 1,033 patients hospitalized with COVID-19–related pneumonia to a treatment group (515) receiving a combination of the two drugs, and a control group (518) receiving only remdesivir and placebo.

With over 500,000 COVID cases, L.A. at ‘catastrophic’ levels – Los Angeles Times

The COVID-19 crisis hit what Los Angeles County officials called “uncharted territory” Friday, as the daily case count surged dramatically to 13,815 and total cases topped 500,000, the latest signs that the virus is spreading with ferocious speed.

“We’re on a very dangerous track to see unprecedented and catastrophic suffering,” said L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer. “At this point, we’re seeing daily numbers of cases and hospitalizations that we’ve not experienced and, frankly, did not anticipate.”

Editorial: Don’t just deny Texas’ original action. Decimate it. – SCOTUSblog

In a time that is so very deeply polarized, I cannot think of a person, group or institution other than the Supreme Court that could do better for the country right now. Supporters of the president who have been gaslighted into believing that there has been a multi-state conspiracy to steal the election recognize that the court is not a liberal institution. If the court will tell the truth, the country will listen. Source: Editorial: Don’t just deny Texas’ original action. Decimate it. – SCOTUSblog

Trump loses Wisconsin election lawsuit challenging mail votes – Business Insider

“The real dispute here is whether or not there were erroneous interpretations of law used in the recount involved in whether the ballots should be counted or not counted,” Simanek said, adding that “the court is satisfied” that Wisconsin correctly interpreted those laws.

Simanek issued the ruling immediately after a hearing with lawyers for Trump and for Dane and Milwaukee counties. It also included lawyers representing Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, whom Trump sued personally even though they have no involvement in Wisconsin’s election administration.

The judge said he was acting quickly because Wisconsin was the only state to miss the “safe harbor” deadline before the Electoral College formalizes Biden’s victory on Monday.

“The bottom line here is that the court should do everything to ensure the will of the voters prevails,” Simanek said.

Five key genes linked with the most severe form of COVID-19 – scientists – The Jerusalem Post

The findings, published in the journal Nature, should help scientists speed up the search for potential drugs for COVID-19 by conducting clinical trials of medicines that target specific antiviral and anti-inflammatory pathways. Among those with the most potential, he said, should be a class of anti-inflammatory drugs called JAK inhibitors, which includes the arthritis drug baricitinib, made by Eli Lilly . Baillie’s team also found that a boost in the activity of the INFAR2 gene could create protection against COVID-19, because it is likely to mimic the effect of treatment with interferon.

Let the Wounds Breathe

quotidian

As parents we all try to do the best we can. But the world is full of unexpected twists and turns. And just when you think, everything you are doing is somehow right, the ground underneath starts to sink and you are knocked out. They say practice makes us perfect. The more you think like a parent, the more you become one, the better you get at remaining neutral and patient and the harder it becomes to fix the wounds.

As the new batch of hormones arrive, our children swipe left, all the efforts we put. So now, there you are, an outdated parent who somehow never understands those, who once were our little angels..!!

Didn’t we feel the same way when we were young? Some of us, just had small arguments with our parents and others had a more traumatic experience. There were times when we raised our voices…
