A Swanky Kakanin

Nengkoy

In my country, there is a ton of silly cultural and superstitious beliefs that needs to be kept and observed during the New Year.  From wearing polka dots, to ensuring 12 types of fruits on the dining table, to jumping when midnight strikes and to making sure all lights are on inside the house, all these and other insane beliefs are observed by Filipinos when New Year happens.  Failure to do so would result to some wicked curse, a good amount of misfortune and a handful of bad lucks the whole year.

Two of the silly beliefs my family did last New Year’s Eve was the tossing of heaps of coins inside the house (for prosperous fortune) plus the serving of classic “kakanin”.  From the amalgamation of two Tagalog root words kain meaning “to eat” and kanin meaning “cooked rice”, kakanin are varieties of sticky and glutinous Filipino…

Unlocking The Hidden Me

Fear is tacit

Visible journey behind

Veiled future ahead

The beauty of life is not knowing what future holds for us. We peel off tomorrow layer by layer living the present of our future as we stroll through each day.

For instance, If we would know we will not become successful we would have stopped trying long before, if we would know, we will achieve wonders, still we would have stopped trying. In both the cases, we would end up doing nothing. In the former we would forebode and in the latter we would become hubristic.

And in between both of these, where will life be lived?

I so want to humm these lines..

Row, row, row your boat

Gently down the stream

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily

Life is but a dream..

God has created a perfect balance of our mind to not foresee the future and…

Coronavirus vaccine: PM expects ‘tens of millions’ of jabs by April – BBC News (sidestepping questions of how many and when now)

Romila Thapar is world-renowned for her work on the history of Hinduism but is a public enemy in India – The Washington Post (Fascist wannabes in India only want their version of history)

For Hindu nationalists, India’s past consists of a glorious Hindu civilization followed by centuries of Muslim rule that Modi has described as a thousand years of “slavery.”

Thapar considers such assertions both simplistic and incorrect. Based on extensive research of Sanskrit and Prakrit texts and drawing upon archaeological data, she presents a more complex picture of Indian history. Her research and writings undermines the ruling party’s efforts to project a unified Hindu tradition stretching back thousands of years and to paint Muslim rulers of India as nothing more than invaders or tyrants.

AP Interview: India bars company from exporting (Covid-19) vaccines – The Washington Post (Vaccine nationalism)

“We can only give (the vaccines) to the government of India at the moment,” Poonawalla said, adding the decision was also made to prevent hoarding.

As a result, he said, the export of vaccines for COVAX — the ambitious initiative created to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines set up by the World Health Organization, vaccines alliance GAVI and CEPI, a global coalition to fight epidemics — won’t begin until March or April.

Poonawalla said that Serum Institute was currently in the process of signing a larger contract with COVAX for 300-400 million doses of the vaccine. That is apart from two existing orders of 100 million doses each for the vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, and another one from Novovax. He said the deal would be finalized in the coming weeks.

The daily count of new coronavirus infections in Japan reached 3,059 on Saturday, hitting above the 3,000 mark for the fifth straight day. The figure was down from a record high of 4,520 logged on Thursday, apparently because some local governments suspended the announcements of infection numbers during the New Year’s holidays.Source: Tokyo reports 816 new COVID-19 cases Sunday | The Japan Times
