A decade-long warming trend in the Gulf of St. Lawrence continued in 2020 with deep waters reaching record highs, according to ocean climate data released Tuesday by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
Coronavirus tracker: New cases and hospitalizations on the decline while deaths appear to level off as of Jan. 25
The state’s trends of new cases and hospitalizations are on the decline as new deaths are appearing to level off, according to California public health websites.
The end-of-day totals as of Monday, Jan. 25, show that the 14-day average of 31,882 new cases is down 24% from its high of 42,468 on Jan. 16. The 17,236 hospitalizations reported Monday are down 21% from a high of 21,938 on Jan. 6.
The 14-day average of 501 new deaths reported each day is down 2.7% from the 515 high on Jan. 21.
California communities reported 31,656 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, bringing the total number of people who have been infected to date to 3,192,114. There were 434 new deaths reported for a total of 37,499 cumulative deaths.
There were 308 fewer patients admitted into California hospitals, making for 18,039 hospitalizations statewide on Monday.
The elderly continue to be the most vulnerable age group. While those from ages 18 to 49 account for 58% of all cases they only represent 7% of all deaths, while those 65 and older account for 11% of all cases and 75% of all deaths.
