1869 – The largest alluvial gold nugget in history, called the “Welcome Stranger”, is found in Moliagul, Victoria, Australia.
The Welcome Stranger is the biggest alluvial gold nugget found, which had a calculated refined weight of 97.14 kilograms (3,123 ozt).
It measured 61 by 31 cm (24 by 12 in) and was discovered by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates on 5 February 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria, Australia, about 14.6 kilometres (9 miles) north-west of Dunolly.

Found only 3 cm (1.2 in) below the surface, near the base of a tree on a slope leading to what was then known as Bulldog Gully.
Deason, Oates, and a few friends took the nugget to the London Chartered Bank of Australia, in Dunolly, which advanced them £9,000. Deason and Oates were finally paid an estimated £9,381 for their nugget, which became known as the “Welcome Stranger”.

Why India’s farmers’ protests have Sikhs fearing violent attacks

The Modi government’s efforts to repress dissent expose its growing authoritarianism, which must be challenged. If not, far more serious violence lies ahead.
¿Cómo debería ser la enseñanza virtual?
What should virtual education look like?

Biden is expected to announce increase in amount of refugees admitted into US
The Biden administration plans to announce on Thursday that it will increase the number of refugees who can come to the United States, a move toward building up refugee admissions after years of historic low arrivals under former President Donald Trump, according to two sources familiar with the plans.
President Joe Biden, who pledged to raise the cap during the campaign, is expected to announce his intention to increase the number of refugees allowed into the US during a visit to the State Department, according to one source. The Trump administration set a refugee cap of 15,000 for this fiscal year, the lowest since 1980. It’s unclear by how much the Biden administration will increase that cap.
The refugee cap must be approved by the president. Biden has pledged to set an annual admissions cap of 125,000, though the plan is to wait until October, when the next fiscal year begins, to set that cap, according to one of the sources.

Lebanon: No Justice 6 Months After Blast | Human Rights Watch
Lebanese authorities have failed in the past six months to deliver any justice for the catastrophic explosion at Beirut’s port on August 4, 2020, Human Rights Watch said today. The stalled domestic investigation, riddled with serious due process violations, as well as political leaders’ attempts to stop the investigation reinforce the need for an independent, international inquiry.
The investigation has been paused since December 17, 2020, after two former ministers charged in the case filed a motion asking Lebanon’s Court of Cassation replace the investigating judge, Fadi Sawan. It is not clear when the investigation will resume. Sawan has, since August, brought charges against 37 people, 25 of whom are detained under conditions that appear to violate their due process rights. Those detained are mostly mid to low-level customs, port, and security officials; and their families and lawyers say that the judicial authorities have not yet presented the specific charges or evidence against them.

How the world’s largest rhino population dropped by 70 percent—in a decade – BY DINA FINE MARON PHOTOGRAPHS BY BRENT STIRTON PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 2, 2021 — Just Sayin’

Many rhinos on private reserves in South Africa—these are at John Hume’s game ranch in Nelspruit—are dehorned to reduce the chance of their being killed by poachers. But horns grow back every few years, making this a costly strategy for cash-strapped public parks such as Kruger. https://www.npr.org/2021/01/25/960378979/whos-black-enough-for-reparations
