California wolf tracked near Yosemite, furthest south ‘in modern times’

A young male gray wolf has been tracked to Mono County, east of Yosemite National Park, the furthest south a wolf has been spotted in the state “in modern times,” the Center for Biological Diversity said.

OR-93 started life in Oregon’s White River pack, which lies south of Mount Hood. As a youngster, he was fitted with a tracking collar, which has helped fish and wildlife officials monitor his journey. Early this year, he departed Oregon, likely in search of a new territory.

“Given the time of year, we assume OR-93 has traveled such a long way in search of a mate,” Center for Biological Diversity wolf advocate Amaroq Weiss said in a statement. “I hope he can find one.”

In early February, OR-93 was tracked to Modoc County before he quickly traversed hundreds of miles south, trotting between Sierra state highways 4 and 208. Recently, he moved to Mono County, just east of Yosemite National Park. Previously, the furthest south a gray wolf was spotted was the Lake Tahoe Basin; that wolf, OR-54, then went back north after his Tahoe vacation.

The gray wolf was hunted into extinction in California by the 1920s, primarily by farmers concerned about the threat to livestock. OR-93 is only the 16th documented gray wolf found in California since then. The state has two wolf packs — although one disappeared in 2015.

The Lassen pack has reproduced each year since 2017, but the Shasta pack only had pups in 2015. That year, a breeding pair had five pups and a few months later, fell off the map. One of the then-grown pups was found in Nevada in 2016.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife will continue to monitor OR-93 as he travels through the state.

“We’re thrilled to learn this wolf is exploring deep into the Sierra Nevada, since scientists have said all along this is great wolf habitat,” Weiss said. “He’s another beacon of hope, showing that wolves can return here and flourish as long as they remain legally protected.”

How Facebook Silenced an Enemy of Turkey To Prevent a Hit To the Company’s Business

censorship_64.png

Long-time Slashdot reader schwit1 shares this report from ProPublica:

As Turkey launched a military offensive against Kurdish minorities in neighboring Syria in early 2018, Facebook’s top executives faced a political dilemma. Turkey was demanding the social media giant block Facebook posts from the People’s Protection Units, a mostly Kurdish militia group the Turkish government had targeted.

Should Facebook ignore the request, as it has done elsewhere, and risk losing access to tens of millions of users in Turkey? Or should it silence the group, known as the YPG, even if doing so added to the perception that the company too often bends to the wishes of authoritarian governments?

It wasn’t a particularly close call for the company’s leadership, newly disclosed emails show. “I am fine with this,” wrote Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s No. 2 executive, in a one-sentence message to a team that reviewed the page. Three years later, YPG’s photos and updates about the Turkish military’s brutal attacks on the Kurdish minority in Syria still can’t be viewed by Facebook users inside Turkey. The conversations, among other internal emails obtained by ProPublica, provide an unusually direct look into how tech giants like Facebook handle censorship requests made by governments that routinely limit what can be said publicly…

Publicly, Facebook has underscored that it cherishes free speech: “We believe freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, and we work hard to protect and defend these values around the world,” the company wrote in a blog post last month about a new Turkish law requiring that social media firms have a legal presence in the country. “More than half of the people in Turkey rely on Facebook to stay in touch with their friends and family, to express their opinions and grow their businesses.” But behind the scenes in 2018, amid Turkey’s military campaign, Facebook ultimately sided with the government’s demands. Deliberations, the emails show, were centered on keeping the platform operational, not on human rights. “The page caused us a few PR fires in the past,” one Facebook manager warned of the YPG material…

“Facebook confirmed to ProPublica that it made the decision to restrict the page in Turkey following a legal order from the Turkish government — and after it became clear that failing to do so would have led to its services in the country being completely shut down.”

Is it possible to eat tomatoes for arthrosis of the joints?

Knee arthrosis is a disease that requires constant correction of the diet. If the pathology is caused by metabolic disorders, chondrocalcinosis and uric acid crystals accumulate in the joint cavity.

To control them, remove and stop progression, you should control the use of vegetable products, especially tomatoes. As strange as it sounds, tomatoes and joints are closely interconnected.

Osteoarthritis patients find this vegetable to increase pain. Therefore, with a complete rejection of the product, well-being improves. What is really happening, how experts comment on this topic, is it possible to eat tomatoes, how harmful or useful are tomatoes for joints, how to use them correctly – we will consider all these questions in this article.

Is it possible to eat tomatoes with arthrosis?
Tomato is the main vegetable in all cuisines of the world. It would be strange if he did not have a lot of useful properties. It contains:

  • vitamins A, PP, C, E, K, H, group B;
  • micro-and macroelements molybdenum, fluorine, selenium, iodine, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, potassium, chlorine,
  • calcium, sulfur, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium;
  • organic acids – citric, oxalic, malic.

Tomato competes successfully with citrus fruits in terms of ascorbic acid content. This vitamin is responsible for the synthesis of collagen – the main component of cartilage tissue. Vitamin PP is essential for blocking interleukins and pain relief.

Vitamin E improves joint mobility. Selenium activates the absorption of sulfur, which is necessary for the synthesis of connective tissue. Manganese helps to improve the nutrition of the intervertebral cartilage and discs.

This whole preamble is a good presentation of tomato products. But how much does it help with arthrosis? After all, doctors fear that vegetables with a high acid content negatively affect the condition of the joints.

For example, oxalic acid builds up in the body and causes severe joint pain. This is due to the fact that the substance penetrates the intestines and disrupts the digestion process, removes oxalates. The body becomes acidic, and this intensifies the processes of inflammation, leads to damage to the connective tissue. This influence is especially noticeable on the legs and arms.

Oxalic acid also irritates the nervous tissue, which provokes pain.

The most dangerous thing is to combine vegetables containing oxalic acid and dairy products, fresh bread, meat, and seafood.

In general, with arthrosis, it is recommended to use with caution (or not eat at all) vegetables of the nightshade family – potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes. They contain purine compounds that accumulate uric acid salts in the joints.

The effect of tomatoes on joints
If you do not get carried away with tomatoes, but use them in moderation, oxalic and uric acids do not particularly affect the body. But if you have pain, you need to temporarily exclude foods from the diet.

Vegetables are prohibited for the following reasons:

  • with exacerbation;
  • with chronic and advanced forms of the disease;
  • if you have an allergy.

Tomatoes are rich in minerals and organic compounds that have a positive effect on the body – they strengthen and tone the internal organs.

A red vegetable has a negative effect due to the presence of oxalic acid in it. In the structure of a plant, the element is capable of crystallizing into insoluble salts. This leads to their excessive accumulation in the joints of the bones of the skeleton and a destructive effect on the cartilage tissue. People with problems in the musculoskeletal system need to give up the vegetable completely.

The presence of individual intolerance is also a serious reason to exclude a product from the diet.

If there is swelling, runny nose, bronchospasm, then this means intolerance to the product.

The best solution would be to see a doctor. In the absence of negative reactions, the doctor may allow the use of the vegetable in reasonable quantities.

Recommendations for use in case of joint disease

If a patient suffering from arthrosis decides to include tomatoes in his diet, then they should be consumed according to the rules. Some of your favorite foods will have to be discarded, such as scrambled eggs with tomato rings.

The vegetable should not be combined with seafood and meat, as the pH level in the stomach can rise, leading to inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa.

Tomato juice can be drunk separately from any food, as an independent dish. This is due to the fact that the drink contains substances that dilute the components involved in the processing of food.

For patients with arthrosis, doctors advise the gradual introduction of a red vegetable into the main diet. The first 2 weeks are allowed to eat 1 tomato per day. It is especially important at this time to carefully monitor the reactions of your body and the presence of pain. If the condition worsens, the vegetable should be stopped immediately.

Another way out of the situation is offered by doctors. You can replace red fruits with yellow ones. When eating, peel them and add vegetable oil. No more than 100-200 g of this delicacy is allowed.

With arthrosis, it is advisable not to eat more than 5 tomatoes per week.

Vegetables are relevant fresh and cooked – casseroles, ketchup, juice.

Which tomatoes are better – fresh, canned, or thermally processed?
If you have been diagnosed with arthrosis, you will have to monitor your diet more carefully.

Salted and canned vegetables will have to be abandoned right away. This also includes tomato-based pasta and sauces. If vinegar is present in a dish with tomatoes, then it is better not to eat it.

Heat treatment is the best option. With this method of preparation, the beneficial qualities of tomatoes only increase, and the acid load on the body decreases. You can make homemade pasta, hot salad, vegetable stew. And in no case should we forget about the dissonance with bread, meat, seafood, milk.

Fresh tomatoes are the ideal food for replenishing the loss of minerals. Recently, scientists have focused on lycopene, one of the components found in tomatoes. It is an organic compound that saturates the fruit with a red color. Plus, lycopene is a great antioxidant.

When combined with vegetable fats, lycopene works wonders. Therefore, do not be lazy to season the tomato salad with a few tablespoons of vegetable oil.

Scientists have found that in tomatoes cooked at high temperatures, after 2 minutes, lycopene becomes one-third more than in fresh fruits. If you cook a vegetable for 15 minutes, the amount of the substance will increase by one and a half times.

Eliminating tomatoes from the diet is a last resort. It is best to alternate between raw and cooked vegetables.

Tomato will speed up metabolic processes, and nutrients will have a positive effect on the joints.

At Least 18 Protesters Killed Across Myanmar as Junta Forces Fire on Crowds

Deaths reportedly occurred as a result of live ammunition fired into crowds in Yangon, Mandalay, Dawei and Myeik in the southeastern Tanintharyi region, the central regional capital, Bago and Pakokku in the western Magway region, it said.

RFA’s Burmese Service was able to confirm through witnesses and demonstrators 15 protester deaths — four in Yangon, three in Mandalay, four in Dawei, two protesters in Bago, and one each on Mawlamyine, the Mon State capital, and Pakokku.

At least 18 people were killed when security forces fired on protesters in cities across Myanmar on Sunday, the bloodiest day in a month of mass demonstrations against the military’s ouster of the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Capping a weekend of escalating violence against opponents of the Feb. 1 coup, police in riot gear and uniformed soldiers shot flash-bang and stun grenades and fired live and rubber bullets at protesters, causing fatalities in at least six major cities, including Yangon and Mandalay.

The U.N. Human Rights Office said it had received “credible information” that at least 18 people were killed and more 30 were wounded, in the highest single-day death toll since the military takeover brought hundreds of thousands of protesters into streets across the country of 54 million people.

“We strongly condemn the escalating violence against protests in Myanmar and call on the military to immediately halt the use of force against peaceful protestors,” the rights office said in a statement.

The casualties occurred when “police and military forces have confronted peaceful demonstrations, using lethal force and less-than-lethal force,” the UN statement said.

Accountability demands

An activist group called Gen Z Revolt 2021 tweeted that 26 protesters had been killed Sunday, including seven in Myeik and one in Lashio, in northern Shan State.

According to the junta-controlled MRTV on Sunday evening, eight people were killed, with 571 people arrested nationwide. Including 322 in Yangon alone.

“We are heartbroken to see the loss of so many lives in Myanmar. People should not face violence for expressing dissent against the military coup,” the U.S. Embassy in Yangon said in a statement.

“Targeting of civilians is abhorrent,” the mission added.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said the world must insist on accountability for the deaths, any illegal use of live ammunition by Myanmar security forces, and the violation of basic rights from the deepening crackdown.

“The Myanmar security forces’ clear escalation in use of lethal force in multiple towns and cities across the country in response to mostly peaceful anti-coup protesters is outrageous and unacceptable, and must be immediately halted,” he said in a statement.

“Security forces are also engaged in a widening pattern of arrests, detaining scores with each passing hour,” added Robertson.

Among those arrested as police and soldiers started using more aggressive tactics against protesters Saturday were 13 journalists detained while covering protests.

Journalists detained

Eight journalists and photojournalists were picked up Saturday, including Associated Press correspondent Thein Zaw, who remained in custody after two of the eight were released. Another five local journalists were detained in several cities on Sunday, RFA has learned.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a watchdog group, said that as of Sunday, 1,132 people have been arrested, charged or sentenced in relation to the military coup, with 883 still being held or facing outstanding charges. It counted approximately 30 deaths since the coup.

Myanmar state television announced on Saturday that U.N. envoy from the deposed civilian government who made an impassioned appeal Friday for the world body to “use any means necessary to take action” to restore democracy had been fired for betraying the country.

“In addition to the existing support, we need further strongest possible action from the international community to immediately end the military coup, to stop oppressing the innocent people, to return the state power to the people, and to restore the democracy,” Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun told the 193-member U.N. General Assembly.

Tens of thousands of civil servants across Myanmar who have joined the three-week-old anti-coup civil disobedience movement face increasing pressure from employers who are threatening to fire and sue them for going on strike to support the protests.

The military council says that civil servants have been coerced and agitated to join the movement by disruptive elements.

More than 24,000 employees from 24 government ministries are taking part in the strikes, according to data collected by groups participating in the movement. The strikes have brought nearly all public health services, education, and railway transportation to a halt.
