Biden plan delivers big-time for California cities – Pasadena Star News
With the new federal infusion, local officials can breathe a sigh of relief — forestalling drastic potential cuts in city services. The ARP money for local cities is significant. Pasadena, for example, is slated to get $52 million; El Monte nearly $44 million; West Covina $20 million; and Whittier $19 million. Given the magnitude of the funding, cities will be under tremendous pressure to burn through the money — or stash some of it in their reserves. Just patching budgets, won’t fulfill President Biden’s promise to “build back better.” Source: Biden plan delivers big-time for California cities – Pasadena Star News

Prison Guards Across the Country Refusing to Take Covid Vaccine
A report by AP News and The Marshall Project has found that prison employees across the country are frequently rejecting the vaccine at higher rates than prisoners. Some of the reasons prison employees have given for rejecting the vaccine include concerns about its effectiveness and side effects; some cited debunked conspiracy theories peddled by far-right websites; and others simply have a lack of faith in the prison system given how poorly they have handled mitigating the effects of the virus.
This is concerning for a multitude of reasons: Prisons are natural hotspots for the virus, as the cramped living conditions, questionable hygiene practices, and an inability to effectively distance makes it easier to transmit the virus. FCI Miami, a federal prison in Miami, experienced two outbreaks last year. The first, which happened last July, resulted in over 400 of the prison’s 852 incarcerated people contracting the virus. In December, another 100 people also wound up contracting the virus.
Despite that, less than half of the prison’s 240 employees have been fully vaccinated, despite the vaccine being made available to them for well over a month.

The Greenland ice sheet may be more vulnerable than we knew to global warming, new study shows – The Washington Post
Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities have already raised global average temperatures more than 1 degree Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit) since 1880. Greenland is losing ice at its fastest rate since humans invented agriculture, causing about 14 millimeters of sea level rise in the past half-century.
If the island’s entire ice sheet were to melt now, global sea levels would rise by more than 20 feet.
“We don’t want to see what that looks like,” said Christ, a geologist at the University of Vermont. “It underscores the urgency of needing to change the way things are going right now.”

Myanmar Crackdown on Protesters Kills 25 as Junta Imposes 24-Hour Mobile Internet Shutdown — Radio Free Asia
At least 25 people were shot dead Monday as anti-coup protesters in multiple cities braved increasing violence by security forces following a bloody weekend that killed scores of protesters in Myanmar’s largest city, witnesses said.
The junta that overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government on Feb. 1 also imposed a 24-hours shutdown of mobile internet service in an attempt to cut off lines of communication among protesters and other members of a nationwide civil disobedience movement (CDM) that has opposed military rule for six weeks.
The suspension of internet service forced court officials in the capital Naypyidaw to postpone the videoconference trial hearing of the 75-year-old deposed leader, who has been under house arrest since the coup and is facing a handful of what supporters say are spurious charges.
