IDB Jamaica civil society group calls for establishment of National Commission on COVID-19

Petchary's Blog

Yesterday (Friday, March 5) Jamaica recordedits highest ever number of new cases (527). In the past seven days, 29 people have died from COVID-19 and we have had around two thousand new cases. We have COVID-19 cases in every community, in every parish. As we are still waiting for the vaccine (the first batch of which I understand is on its way from India, although the Ministry of Health and Wellness has not confirmed this yet) we need to be focusing on what’s happening on the ground.

There is clearly something missing; as numbers soar and the 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew remains in place, Jamaicans continue to flout COVID-19 protocols and regulations at every turn. It is not only parties, but also large gatherings at funerals, burials, in churches, crowds of people outside government offices; vendors not wearing masks at markets; and so on. A two-week ban…

Ohio official Lee Wong removes shirt, shows off scars to call out anti-Asian violence: ‘Is this patriot enough?’ – The Washington Post

Ever since he moved to the United States from China more than a half-century ago, Lee Wong has been told he doesn’t look American enough. Despite his 20 years of service in the U.S. Army, he says his patriotism has also been questioned by people who “can’t get over this face.”

So when Wong called out the uptick in violence and discrimination against Asian Americans during a meeting of the board of trustees in West Chester Township, Ohio, the board chairman calmly unbuttoned his dress shirt to show those in attendance at the Tuesday meeting what patriotism looked like: red scars across his chest from his military service.

“Here is my proof,” said Wong, 69, who last year ran as a Republican candidate for the state Senate. “Now, is this patriot enough?”

Serbia Hails Chinese Companies as Saviors, but Locals Chafe at Costs – The New York Times

Activists concede that air pollution levels in Bor have fallen since protests, but say that the main danger has now shifted to towns and villages to the south, where hundreds of Chinese workers brought in by Zijin are developing one of the world’s biggest unexploited copper deposits, and digging for gold.

The earth around the new mine trembles from blasting work and the heavy trucks, driven by Chinese workers, that rumble along roads adorned with China’s red national flag. Rivers and streams are discolored by effluent.

The government has added to public anger by issuing expropriation orders so that Zijin can build access roads and expand its mine. Dragan Viacic, a farmer, said he had received a letter from Serbia’s finance ministry informing him that he must sell 13 acres of his land at a fraction of the market price.

“They said this was necessary in the public interest but in reality this is just the interest of the Chinese,” he said.

Murder of Archbishop AIphege

English History

Book 2,Chapter 9, Edward 975 AD to 1016 AD – Sweyn’s Revenge

Yet it shows that even then the wealth of the country must have been considerable, or it could not have met such severe imposts, occurring as they did so frequently. “While the administrators of England thus made their dastardly bargains with the foreign foe at the expense of the people, there was one man found, a rich and powerful magnate of the land, who preferred death to giving a sanction to such conduct by his own example. This was Alphege, archbishop of Canterbury. A prisoner of the Danes, on the capture of his metropolitan city, and dragged among their baggage from one encampment to another, he remained day after day in chains, without even uttering the word ransom.

The Danes, first breaking silence, offered to restore their captive to liberty on condition of his paying them three…

I Choose Love!

From The Quill

I was on a midnight stroll when I came across the doomed cracks in my castle. They were long, tracing the length of each magnificent wall, running around the deep carvings, distorting the beauty to their taste.

Their taste- bitter taste;

And I, for the longest time, seemed to have given into it- given into the trap that was set to lock me out of my own paradise, to put me behind barbed wires that had me feeling devoid of love; despite how beautifully abundant it seemed on the other side, no part of me had the courage to reach out for it.

It was in this place where the importance of love dawned over me. Whoever had pushed me downhill had only helped me realize how everything I ever did, was motivated by a desperate need for love.

For me, love was the center of…

The Ancient Guards of Pancharatna

Weekend Stories by Trishikh

In the year 1980, a 17th-century cryptic temple lay hidden deep in the Joypur forest of Bishnupur subdivision in the Bankura district of India’s West Bengal state. This archaic monument was stone-built, unlike the other commonly found historical structures of terracotta in the region.

The jungle had completely engulfed the structure, and ancient trees and exotic flora and fauna had covered nearly every inch of the ruins. Built of Laterite rock, adorned with eroding stucco carvings, and with a base of 45 square feet, the temple must have been a sight to behold when it was built.

A high wall of 25 feet surrounded the entire 23,500 square feet complex, giving it the impression of a fort rather than a place of worship. Perhaps it was built for a different purpose other than praying.

On the four corners were four massive turrets or column rooms, and from the middle of…
