Myanmar: US calls on China to hold junta accountable | News | DW | 31.03.2021

The US said China should use its influence to hold Myanmar’s military leadership accountable for the unrest that has so far claimed over 500 lives. Separately, the UN envoy on Myanmar warned that the country was on the brink of a civil war. Myanmar’s junta is facing daily protests since ousting the elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi on February 1. The military responded with a brutal clampdown that has left hundreds of civilians dead. On Wednesday, the US said it was continuing to call on China to hold those responsible for the coup “to account.” “What the junta has done in Burma is not in the interests of the United States. It’s not in the interests of our partners and allies, and it’s not in the interests of Beijing,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price.

San Francisco man who allegedly threatened to ‘shoot Chinese people’ arrested | San Francisco | The Guardian

Darrell Hunter, 45, was arrested Tuesday near the business in the Tenderloin neighborhood after the woman called police, officer Adam Lobsinger said in a statement.

The woman first called officers Sunday when she accused Hunter of entering the bakery and threatening to “shoot Chinese people”. The woman told officers it was the third day in a row Hunter had entered the store and caused a disruption. She said it was the first time she had called police because of the threat of violence, Lobsinger said.

She again called police Tuesday after she said Hunter returned and mimicked a gun with his hand. Hunter had left the business by the time officers arrived, but police found him a few blocks away and arrested him.

Veronica Escobar and Jim Darling on the increase in migrants crossing the border | The Texas Tribune

As more people are apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border, U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar and McAllen Mayor Jim Darling discuss what the situation means for Texas.

The increasing number of migrants seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border can be explained by poverty, violence and climate change, according to U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso.

“Until we address this strategically with humanity and with compassion, and with thought about our entire hemisphere, we will be having the same conversation every single year,” Escobar said.

Her comments came during a Texas Tribune event with McAllen Mayor Jim Darling. The conversation, moderated by Tribune Executive Editor Ross Ramsey, was recorded on Monday and shared online Wednesday.
