The Belfast violence shows young working-class people have been failed again | Northern Irish politics | The Guardian

In 1998, when I was 10 years old, my generation was told that peace was within reach, that the new Northern Ireland assembly would finally allow the people of this place to govern themselves. The devolution of policing and justice arrived after a number of false starts, and for a while, all seemed calm – yet much of it was held together by naivety and hope. The conflict may have ended, but the fighting didn’t. The fight for jobs, education, mental health and addiction support, for housing and investment continued on and on, with the political establishment across these islands simply equating the absence of violence with success of the peace process.

Except there was no process – there was war and then there was peace – the transition between the two didn’t manifest as a benefit to working-class communities across Northern Ireland in any real or meaningful way.

Covid: Younger Brazilians fall ill as cases explode – BBC News

Concern is growing in Brazil about the rising number of young people who are critically ill in hospital with Covid-19.

Research suggests more than half of patients being treated in intensive care last month were under 40.

The BBC’s Mark Lowen visited Latin America’s largest cemetery, a makeshift hospital and a vaccine hub to find out why the handling of the pandemic in Brazil has become a public health disaster.

Vaccinated Palestinians to pray at the Temple Mount during Ramadan – The Jerusalem Post

Some 10,000 vaccinated Palestinians will be permitted to visit the Temple Mount on April 16, COGAT announced on Tuesday. The entry will allow Palestinians to pray there during the first Friday of Ramadan.

This was a difficult decision as the spread of coronavirus among Palestinians is still quite high and many are still not vaccinated, but they requested access to pray for the sick nonetheless, explained COGAT. After much discussion, the Health Ministry approved, allowing vaccinated individuals to pray freely on the Temple Mount.
Still, the majority of Palestinians, who are not vaccinated, will not be permitted to join in the prayers.

WHO urges pause in market sale of captured live wild animals – The Washington Post

The United Nations’ health agency on Tuesday urged countries to suspend the sale of live animals captured from the wild in food markets as an emergency measure, saying wild animals are a leading source of emerging infectious diseases like the coronavirus. The World Health Organization, backed by key partners, issued new guidance saying that animals — particularly wild animals — “are the source of more than 70 percent of all emerging infectious diseases in humans, many of which are caused by novel viruses.”
