Masala Tea

Weekend Stories by Trishikh

As the clock struck four in the twilight hours every morning, as the slumbering postcolonial Indian city of Kolkata slowly woke up to face another day, Shibnath Sammadar or SS would get busy opening his 150-year-old tea-shanty.

Located diagonally opposite the main gate of Scottish Church College, on the north-eastern wall corner of the Hedua Talab lake, at the intersection of Urquhart Square (today’s Shashi Bhusan Sarkar lane) and Beadon Street (renamed now as Abhedananda Road), the tea stall was opened by SS’s grandpappy in the year 1870.

Business success was, however, never the Sammadar family’s cup of tea. Even after three generations of running the stall, they were unable to make a concrete structure, and the shop always remained an illegal roadside tin and bamboo tea-shanty.

Though in plain sight, the shop was a rickety and ramshackle suit-stained street-stall like a million more in the city, however, in reality…

În căutarea timpului timid – ore de drum

20170320_114822 Baeza, 2017

In terms of cities with film scenery, I recommend the Andalusian Baeza, who has stood out for his ambitions since the time when it was the capital of a small region ruled by the Moors. It is now a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site, remarkable for the perfect fidelity of the renovations.

Day 2/67 of 5 month GED, Adulting, and the Nile

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

The Four Freedoms movement starts  with empathy building, which both leads to and requires continuous learning.  Today’s question is about the Nile:

how do you imagine that you would you feel about the river, if you were an Ancient Egyptian?

This is a particularly key concept for all of us who live near water, or nowhere near water, to consider regularly because, how do we know if there is or isn’t enough of it (as someone in Fresno, CA asked me recently: why does it not look like we have a water shortage…)?

Action Items  for Adulting that we can take right now:

1.) Consider our responsibility to give back…

Every single day, people showed him two coins; one silver and the other one gold, then they asked him to choose.

He always chose the silver one which was less in value. New people used to come to visit after they heard about the stupid beggar. They offered him both coins just to see if the story was true.

And when he did pick the silver coin, they started making fun of him. This became an ongoing habit for people for years.

Not Just a Number – #poetry #NaPoWriMo

Night Owl Poetry - Dorinda Duclos

I sometimes hide my eyes
Behind darkened glasses
Care to look at the world
Through rose colored flashes

Psychedelic prisms
I watch the colors blend
Wishing it could be like this
Throughout the world, again

Hippies spreading love
Peace and understanding
So tired of the ones, who
Just keep on demanding

I will not hide forever, no
Behind this tinted glass
Cause I’ll never be the one
To follow all, en masse

March to the beat of a different drummer
I refuse to ever become just a number….
