Peel’s Brimstone

Michael Stephen Wills Photography

“In November 1845 the British government set up a Relief Commission for Ireland which imported Indian corn and meal from the United States. This arrived in Cork early in 1846 and was distributed around the country where local food depots and relief committees were established. Indian corn (maize) was not grown in Ireland and was an unfamiliar food. It was difficult to grind and in some areas was known as “Peel’s brimstone,” after the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. Special leaflets were issued to describe how to cook maize.” From the exhibit (below), Cobh Heritage Center.

Instructions for how to cook maize. In the west of Ireland many people spoke Irish.

“On Saturday last, the Government Sales of Indian Corn commenced in Cork. Immediately on the depoys being opened, the crowds of poor persons who gathered round them were so turbulently inclined as to require the immediate interference of the…

“An era of fear and division ends and an era of hope begins”. A time, says Salai Maung Taing San, spokesman for the newly formed “Burmese National Unity Government”, in which “there will be no more religious or ethnic divisions”. With these words, in an online conference, the “shadow government” was formed that opposes the military junta that took power in a coup d’etat on 1 February.   Source: ASIA/MYANMAR – The era of hope: the new Burmese government of national unity, in opposition to the military junta – Agenzia Fides

Movie | Movie - Bagdad Café

I wanted to introduce you to a Movie that I loved to see in cinema and on DVD : BAGDAD CAFE . A moving, upsetting and fascinating film. A beautiful story of friendship, both moving, exciting, full of humanism and tolerance. A magnificent Movie and a masterpiece .

I really liked this film, which particularly touched me a lot and moved me. So I bought the film in DVD. That’s why it has a place of honor on my blog (category “my films” ). My favorite movie. Also, a very beautiful film that I recommend you. A Movie to see and to have in your DVD library :

Synopsis : Following an argument with her husband, Jasmin, a woman of Bavarian origin, lands in a small seedy hotel located between Las Vegas and DisneyLand: the Bagdad Café. The place, run by Brenda, a boisterous and surly young woman, is a haunt of truck drivers and fanciful characters. It is under these conditions that an extraordinary friendship will be born between Jasmin and Brenda, two personalities however diametrically opposed …

After a violent argument, Jasmin, a German tourist on vacation in the United States, is abandoned by her husband in the middle of the Mojave desert. She finds refuge in the Bagdad Café, a dilapidated motel. As soon as she arrives, she is badly received by the boss, Brenda, but as time goes by, the ice breaks between the two women. Jasmin will also meet Sal Junior, a romantic painter who fascinates her.

Flying high

yaskhan

Resting my head on a cloud to dream
I see daylight stealing the starry gleam.

I feel the sunlight pour into my soul
As I skywalk the heavens, take a stroll.

Wings of angels keep me up on high
On ancient pinions, I glide, I fly.

Grabbing hold of time as I drift
Following the sun and stars as they shift.

I cool off into a rain that feels like ink
I see my quill swigging a drink.

Pouring into white of a paper cloud
I ride into a rainbow that has me wowed.

Just a dream

yaskhan

When a poet is broken
All the words have been spoken.
When pages have been shredded
And ink drained and wetted.
And when the heart stumbled
With words I fumbled.
When things don't feel right
Sadness one cannot fight.
Sometimes the tears don't fall
One needs a shoulder to bawl.
I dip my pen in the inkwell of my blood
Wait for the words to break free and flood.
Opening the floodgates of my heart
And see the sorrow flow and depart.
Then I realize it's all been a dream
Things are just not the way they seem.

Like me tender – ore de drum – Troy, 2018 I wonder what Troy would look like today if Paris made another choice.

Fortifications, ramparts, palaces and a lot of temples, because people were at the mercy of the gods. But here too there are countless versions, because the altars of the temples were moved with the change of the deities to whom they were worshiped.
