Yale requiring coronavirus vaccines for students to return | TheHill

Yale University in New Haven, Conn., will require students to be vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning for in-person classes, the school said Monday. In a letter to students and community members on Monday obtained by The Hill, the university’s president and provost stressed that students with religious objections would be exempt from the rule and added that the university would provide shots for those who were unable to be vaccinated over the spring or summer. “There is abundant evidence of the vaccines’ effectiveness and growing confidence that vaccines will be widely available by early summer,” read the letter.

CNN producer asked if she speaks English during arrest in Minnesota, lawyer says | TheHill

Once taken to the country jail, Sung was “patted down and searched by a female officer who put her hands down Sung’s pants and in her bra, fingerprinted, electronically body-scanned, and ordered to strip and put on an orange uniform before attorneys working on her behalf were able to locate her and secure her release, a process that took more than two hours,” Walker’s letter states.

Walz said on Saturday that he respects journalists’ right to cover protests freely without fear of arrest or intimidation.

“A free press is foundational to our democracy. Reporters worked tirelessly during this tumultuous year to keep Minnesotans informed,” he said in a tweet. “I convened a meeting today with media and law enforcement to determine a better path forward to protect the journalists covering civil unrest.”

In a separate tweet, Walz said he had “directed our law enforcement partners to make changes that will help ensure journalists do not face barriers to doing their jobs.”

News of Sung’s alleged treatment was met with widespread condemnation from journalists at CNN and elsewhere across the media and political landscape over the weekend.

India’s capital to lock down amid explosive virus surge – The Washington Post

New Delhi imposed a weeklong lockdown Monday night to prevent the collapse of the Indian capital’s health system, which authorities said had been pushed to its limit amid an explosive surge in coronavirus cases. In scenes familiar from surges elsewhere, ambulances catapulted from one hospital to another, trying to find an empty bed over the weekend, while patients lined up outside of medical facilities waiting to be let in. Ambulances also idled outside of crematoriums, carrying half a dozen dead bodies each. In an effort to combat crisis, India announced that it would soon expand its vaccination campaign to all adults. “People keep arriving, in an almost collapsing situation,” said Dr. Suresh Kumar, who heads Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, one of New Delhi’s largest hospitals for treating COVID-19 patients.

Why Two Big Long Beach Grocery Stores Closed On Saturday: LAist

Kroger announced plans to close a Ralphs and a Food 4 Less, shortly after elected officials in Long Beach passed a temporary hazard pay mandate for large grocery chains.

The “hero pay” rules require larger employers to pay their frontline grocery workers an extra $4 per hour over four months. Proponents said the goal is to compensate employees who have faced enormous risk while working through the pandemic.

Kroger said the pay bump made it financially impossible to keep the two stores open. The company described both the Ralphs on N. Los Coyotes Diagonal and the Food 4 Less on E. South Street as “underperforming.”

Don’t be killers Meduza demands adequate medical care for Alexey Navalny (before it’s too late) — Meduza

Alexey Navalny is dying in prison. After he miraculously survived being poisoned with the chemical weapon Novichok last year, his condition is deteriorating again. In an effort to get access to his own doctors, Navalny launched a hunger strike. Almost three weeks later, the hunger strike continues. This is an act of desperation. Navalny’s team of doctors believes that his life is now at risk.

Defying the Constitution and spitting in the face of democracy, the authorities have also decided to crush and demoralize Navalny’s supporters by branding them as “extremists’ — a radical and unprecedented effort to destroy political competition in Russia.

Pablo Iglesias quits Spanish government ‘to stop’ the far Right in Madrid | openDemocracy

Pablo Iglesias, leader of Unidas Podemos, has decided to quit his post in central government (he is officially second vice president) and stand in the Madrid elections with the aim of stopping the extreme Right.

Iglesias’s decision has bemused many and changed people’s assessments of UP, pushing the party up to fight for third position in the elections – which is enough to make the Right nervous. Nevertheless, some people think that his decision only underlines the lack of internal democracy in Unidas Podemos, a criticism levelled at the group for some years.

Right-wing influence in Madrid

According to Juan Carlos Monedero, one of the founders of Unidas Podemos, Iglesias’s response reflects the absolute “necessity” of “not arriving too late” when it comes to the threat of a far-Right coalition, which would give the far Right the “ability to change things from Madrid”.

Certainly, the Right has the most to gain. Monedero told me that the Right and the extreme Right have huge influence in Madrid: “They have universities and colleges, since the private predominates over the public. Also, they have solid support from the audiovisual media and from all the newspapers except El País.”

What date is this: April 19 Indian Day – Mágica Mistura✨

In Mexico, in 1940, the First Inter-American Indian Congress was held, in which several countries in America participated. The Indians were also invited, but because of the constant persecutions and disrespect they suffered, they did not accept the invitation.
