In our days, the spasmodic search for approval has generated the illusion in many that the number of followers or followers, likes and views is directly proportional and indicative of some virtue or merit. We arrive at an overexposure of oneself that overcomes even the non-distinction and the non-separation between public and private of antiquity.

Every aspect of one’s private life is made public, whereas for the Greeks it was an ethics of coherence and correspondence between one’s conduct both in private and public life.

Modesty, what was the pudicitia for the Romans and aidos for the Greeks, is often sacrificed to chase instant fame through social, so here you live in hiding could be the ‘only solution to preserve their privacy and could represent the necessary care for individual mental health that brings back a healthy jealousy of one’s person, one’s interiority and one’s uniqueness.

Enthusiasm for dance in China – seniors around the world

However, it was by chance that we discovered the great interest that many Chinese people have in dancing in general. We were looking for our hotel in the Wangfujing Dajie in Beijing in the dark when I heard loud radio music. I followed the music and saw a group of people in a small square on a side street who, according to a speaker, were doing certain dance steps. When some of the group saw my interest, they gestured to invite me to join. I would have liked to have done that too, but my husband finally wanted to go to the hotel because we had just had a tiring long-haul flight behind us.

Since we stayed in Beijing for a few days, we had enough time to look around and repeatedly discovered locals in different parks who danced to the music on cassette recorders or the radio. They were mostly well-known standard and Latin American dances, as they are danced here and in many other countries.

The uglification of uptown Kingston

Petchary's Blog

Earth Day was three days ago. I often write and comment on the beauty of our island and the many challenges it faces – climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation of all kinds. But, solutions there are, if only someone would listen; but they are in a great hurry.

As I write, bulldozers are at work in a section of Hanover, destroying mangroves and coastal forest; apparently, this is to build a new large hotel. And when I say large, I am talking 2,000 rooms. While this is happening, Prime Minister Andrew Holness is making speeches at the United Nations, asserting that small island developing states like ours need more funds to help combat climate change. (I am sure we are aware that mangroves are a bulwark against the impact of climate change? Didn’t the National Environment and Planning Agency tell us so?)

But I digress. I am writing…
