Does L.A. County’s new COVID-19 mask mandate make any sense? – Los Angeles Times

“Hopefully, this will be the wakeup call for those who are still vaccine hesitant to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated,” said Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, medical epidemiologist and infectious diseases expert at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.

While he’s not concerned about the pandemic surging to the same kind of devastation seen half a year ago, he is “concerned about the trajectory and the speed of the doubling of new cases.”

“Once we can turn the corner again on this increase, I am confident the county will remove that mandate,” Kim-Farley said. “It’s just a matter of everyone playing their part.”

Gandhi, of UC San Francisco, agreed that vaccinated people masking indoors can be a reasonable policy decision if there are more than 5 people hospitalized for COVID-19 for every 100,000 residents.

Hearty tomato and white bean stew

yum – goin to try.

Blogger's World!

Honestly I don’t like the flavor of raw tomatoes and rarely eat a slice of tomato. But, I love them cooked. I love the taste of tomato-based gravies and used to mix tomato sauce in everything I ate when I was younger.

So today I am sharing with you the recipe of a hearty, flexible stew which has tomato as its main ingredient along with white beans.

This stew comes together with pantry ingredients and delivers layers of flavors. Cherry tomatoes, roasted in olive oil to bring out their sweetness, add a pleasant freshness to this otherwise rich dish.

The backbone of this meal is onion, garlic, and red pepper flakes, to which white beans and stock are added and cooked until thick.

You may top it with some grated cheese, just before serving.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, when supermarket shelves can be lacking, it is only wise to make…

Masks back on in L.A. County – ORANGE COUNTY TRIBUNE

Dr. Muntu Davis, public health officer for Los Angeles County, called the return to masks “an all-hands-on-deck moment.” Since California reopened on June 15, the Delta variant of COVID-10 has sparked a marked increase, mostly among unvaccinated people. The county has been recording over 1,000 new cases each day for a week. People will still be able to go maskless while eating or drinking in restaurants. The change does not affect Orange County, but local rates of confirmed new infections in the OC have risen in recent weeks, from around 50 a day to triple that. Additionally, the University of California announced on Thursday that students, staff and faculty must get vaccinated before returning in the fall. According to the Los Angeles Times, new cases of coronavirus in California are up 175 percent over the past 14 days, and deaths by 32 percent.

My Worst Nightmare

Filosofa's Word

Many things bother me at the moment:  Those who are actively rejecting the COVID vaccine; the determined obstruction by the Republican Party in Congress; climate change and those who refuse to so much as lift a finger to help reverse decades of man-made damage; wealthy people not paying their fair share in taxes; the ignorance of those who still believe in the former guy’s Big Lie, and the list goes on … and on.  However, the one thing that is keeping me awake nights, is bothering me more than any other single issue in this nation, that has made me contemplate seeking a new country to call home, is the current push for voter suppression and the fact that Congress and the Courts are doing NOTHING to stop states from attempting to move this nation back to the days of Jim Crow.

If you share my concerns, I hope you’ll…

Hunter’s Moon

A great and wonderful tale…

Weekend Stories by Trishikh

Chandrabhanu lay motionless as a rock on the wet and cold forest floor, camouflaged in the colours of the jungle like a predator patiently waiting for his score. Neither the seldom trickling of the night dew nor the occasional insects crawling across his seasoned skin made him blink or move. The creature he was after was nothing like any other predator he had ever hunted before. After twenty-one days of chasing this ghost in the darkness, his chances to succeed was best on this illuminated night of the hunter’s moon.

More than three hours had passed since he had moved. The unflinching wait had slowly sunk his weight a few inches into the mossy forest floor. He had finally managed to track down the beast to this ancient cave in the darkest heart of the woods but wondered how to bring down this mighty foe. The animal was stealthier than…

Recycling: Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

EPR provides a financial incentive to manufacturers to use packaging that is recyclable. Companies pay fees for packaging that cannot be recycled, with the fees reduced for packaging that is easier to recycle. There are no fees for packaging that can be entirely recycled.

The experience in Quebec is that this program has brought $250 million back to communities to support recycling programs. EPR was originally introduced in Germany in 1991, and into the rest of the European Union three years later. As demonstrated in Quebec, the program has no impact on the cost of products to consumers. Further, the rate of recycling is 63% in Quebec versus a paltry 25% in the US.

Maine is the first state in the US to implement this program. Oregon has just passed an EPR law, and both Nestle and Walmart now support this legislation.

Maybe there’s something else to learn from our…

Too Many People are Not Aware of the Need for Environmental Care

FunWritings

For many years, those who are not aware of the need for environmental care

Have destroyed mangroves, forests and more important ecosystems, as they pollute the water and air

Causing the planet to become more toxic as time goes by

And now the youth are saying there is a need for change, and some are asking why

Photo by Markus Spiske on Pexels.com

They ask why, when the earth can get too warm for us to live on it anymore

Is it that they don’t know that a change in their action can help them to have a future that is secure?

Now there is too much starvation and poverty that is caused by climate change

It is time for us all to do something new, even if we think it is strange

We do more for ourselves when we think about the…
