Meet the Woman Restoring Native American Peaches to the Southwest – Gastro Obscura

Centuries ago, the Navajo people tended flourishing peach orchards across the Four Corners area, where the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Colorado meet. But in 1863, the U.S. government ordered the Navajo in Four Corners to leave their homelands.

When the Navajo refused to leave, General James H. Carleton ordered Colonel Christopher “Kit” Carson to slaughter their livestock, massacre any resistors, and burn their crops, notably their thousands of peach trees. One American troop, under the command of Captain John Thompson, claimed to have destroyed over 3,000 peach trees. Thompson himself reported how his men, in a single day, cut down what he called 500 “of the best peach trees I have ever seen in the country, every one of them bearing fruit.”

Filosofa's Word

Today, I would like to introduce you to two anomalies.  These are people, relatively young people, who serve in the U.S. Congress and are members of the Republican Party.  What, you ask, makes them an anomaly?  Two things:  they are intelligent and most importantly, they have a conscience.  Yes, a conscience … I know it’s hard to believe in this, the 21st century, the age of Republican far-right lunacy and conspiracy theories.  The two people I wish to introduce you to today are Liz Cheney, representative from Wyoming, and Adam Kinzinger, representative from Illinois.  They’ve both been in the news enough that you no doubt know their names.

They are, to the best of my knowledge, the only two congressional republicans who will be serving on the House Select Committee to investigate the events of and leading up to January 6th, the day insurgents attacked Congress and…

Thoughtful Thursdays, Stayed on Freedom’s Call page 24, and Neighbors

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

It is crucial that we each help our society to become more fully inclusive for all of us today, and to come and work together, for all of us, right? Remembering that neighbors used to know and help each other is part of that, no?

I believe that attention to shared histories, as in DC, may provide part of an answer. I started a note about that, a few years ago, in my book Stayed on Freedom’s Call:

As Marvin Caplan was inspired by the music of the Black church, and Rabbi Abramowitz and members of Tifereth Israel inspired by the complementing music of the Jewish soul, they marched with Dr. King to create a hopeful and more just world for people of all creeds and colors. So, too…
