NIH director: U.S. could see 200,000 daily COVID-19 cases in ‘next couple of weeks’ – UPI.com

NIH Director Dr. Francis Colllins told Fox News Sunday he will “be surprised if we don’t cross 200,000 cases a day in the next couple of weeks” as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 140,144 new cases and a seven-day moving average of 119,523 infections on Friday.

“That’s heartbreaking considering we never thought we would be back in that space again. That was January, February. That shouldn’t be August,” said Collins. “But here we are with Delta variant, which is so contagious and this heartbreaking situation where 90 million people are still unvaccinated who are sitting ducks for this virus and that’s the mess we’re in. We’re in a world of hurt and it’s a critical juncture to try to do everything we can to turn that around.”

Biden administration approves largest increase to SNAP food assistance benefits in program’s history – The Washington Post

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will announce Monday morning that benefit amounts for the program, formerly known as food stamps, will rise an average of 25 percent above pre-pandemic levels. First reported by the New York Times and confirmed by a spokeswoman at the USDA, average monthly benefits, which were $121 per person before the pandemic, will rise by $36 under the new rules.

The increase is based on an update to the Thrifty Food Plan, the formula used to calculate SNAP benefits, which surveys the changing costs of various categories of food.

T-Mobile says it is investigating a forum post claiming to be selling a mountain of personal data. The forum post itself doesn’t mention T-Mobile, but the seller told Motherboard they have obtained data related to over 100 million people, and that the data came from T-Mobile servers.

The data includes social security numbers, phone numbers, names, physical addresses, unique IMEI numbers, and driver licenses information, the seller said. Motherboard has seen samples of the data, and confirmed they contained accurate information on T-Mobile customers. The rapid fall of Afghanistan to Taliban forces, explained – Vox

The agreement was finalized in February 2020 {Trump President} between the US and the Taliban, confirming a full American withdrawal along with reduced allied forces.

US officials and Afghan military officials described a demoralized military following the Doha agreement, seeing the deal as the government’s guaranteed defeat against the Taliban. “They saw that document as the end,” an Afghan special forces officer told the Post, referring to government-aligned officials. “The day the deal was signed we saw the change. Everyone was just looking out for himself. It was like [the United States] left us to fail.”

Iceland has been a vaccination success. Why is it seeing a coronavirus surge? – The Washington Post

The country’s top health officials linked most of the cases to nightclubs and to residents who traveled to London to attend Euro 2020 soccer matches that some warned would be “a recipe for disaster.”

“We’ve seen in many places the so-called breakthrough cases, but invariably the rate of serious disease and death is exceedingly low, and that really is the core message here,” he said. Source: Iceland has been a vaccination success. Why is it seeing a coronavirus surge? – The Washington Post
