NYPD says unvaccinated officers must wear masks on duty | TheHill

“As per Mayoral Executive Order 74, members of the service who wish to remove their face coverings in the workplace must be fully vaccinated and provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Medical Division,” an NYPD spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill on Wednesday.

Officers who cannot provide proof of vaccination will have to wear masks indoors, outdoors and in department-owned vehicles.

Unvaccinated officers will only be allowed to “remove their masks when engaging in reasonable activities such as consuming food, drinking beverages, adjusting the face covering due to temperature, or to correct a breathing condition,” the NYPD said.

Biden Administration to Use Federal Civil Rights Office to Deter States From School Mask Bans – The New York Times

The administration will also send letters to six states — Arizona, Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah — admonishing governors’ efforts to ban universal masking in schools.

Last week, Dr. Cardona sent similar letters to the governors of Texas and Florida, reminding them that districts had both the funding and the discretion to implement safety measures that the C.D.C. recommended for schools. The secretary also made clear that he supported district leaders who defied the governors’ orders.

In his letter to Texas, Mr. Cardona warned that the state was jeopardizing its federal relief funding. The state’s attorney general, Ken Paxton, doubled down in response, suggesting on Twitter that he would take the state’s ban on school mask mandates to the Supreme Court.

Biden Administration Asylum Processing Revamp at t.. | migrationpolicy.org

Asylum officers are part of the Asylum Division of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in the Department of Homeland Security. They already do what is known as the credible-fear screening of those making claims for protection at a U.S. border to determine whether the person has a “significant possibility” of establishing eligibility for asylum. Asylum seekers who pass are then permitted to enter the country to present their case for protection before an immigration judge as a defense against deportation. Immigration judges are housed in the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) in the Justice Department.

Instead of screened-in cases being referred to immigration judges, where the entire process must begin anew—often years later because of backlogs—the new rule would authorize asylum officers to maintain jurisdiction over these cases and subsequently complete what is known as the full merits adjudication at a USCIS asylum office near the destination of the asylum seeker. As with immigration courts, asylum offices are located throughout the country.

The core idea is based on research and recommendations the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) made in a 2018 report as a policy solution to make border case management more effective and timely. Under the new policy, asylum seekers found to merit protection will not be kept in limbo for years at a time while awaiting a final status determination. At the same time, those who may not have a strong asylum claim will have less incentive to apply for protection as a means of gaining U.S. entry, as often happens now, since the cases take so long to be decided. The recent increase in arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border, which are the latest in a series of periodic spikes, make this change all the more compelling.

Open Letter To All Republicans In Congress

Filosofa's Word

Dear Sir or Madam,

Never in my 70 years have I been as disgusted with the Republican Party as I am today.  You have taken politics to an all time low, completely disregarding the will of the people and the best interests of the nation.  Your only goal seems to be to take over the nation and hand the reins of power to a cruel and evil dictator.

Note that your party is in the minority, both in Congress and in the nation, yet rather than trying to develop policies that would help people and thereby attract new members, you push people away with your hateful, guttersnipe rhetoric.  One example, Margie Greene, the QAnon conspiracy theorist who sits in the House of Representatives.  Just since returning from her Twitter ban, she has said that she will personally spend money to ensure that every one of the 19 senators who voted…

L.A. council OKs COVID-19 requirement for city workers – Los Angeles Times

Los Angeles city employees will have to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by early October, unless they are granted an exemption for medical or religious reasons, under a new ordinance approved Wednesday by the City Council.

The law, approved on a 13-0 vote, now goes to Mayor Eric Garcetti for his signature. It would permit people with medical conditions or “sincerely held religious beliefs” that prevent them from getting the shots to seek an exemption, requiring regular testing for such employees.
