On Women’s Rights And The ERA

Filosofa's Word

Women’s rights … it has taken us centuries to have the right to own property, to marry who we choose, to divorce him if it doesn’t work out, to VOTE, to earn equal pay for equal work, to have the right to make our own decisions in matters pertaining to our bodies.  What may have taken centuries to build, has taken very little time to destroy.  Two cases caught my eye in the news yesterday.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans has ruled that Texas may prohibit a common second-trimester abortion procedure.  Isn’t it funny that people claim they have control over their body when it comes to getting vaccinated or wearing masks, but when it comes to we women having control over our body for something as life-changing as pregnancy, the Courts will decide what we can or cannot do?  I think, in order to…

‘A Raging Wildfire’: Mississippi Now Top Global Hotspot For COVID-19 Spread

Mississippi has once again broken its record for single-day reports of COVID-19. The Mississippi State Department of Health announced 5,048 new cases of COVID-19 today, just above last Friday’s 5,023. Mississippi is now the global hotspot for new cases of COVID-19 per capita, standing above any other U.S. state or, treated as a country, above any other nation on the planet.

Although new cases are still higher than ever before, deaths have begun to catch up with the delta wave, an outcome that public-health leaders have repeatedly warned is inevitable, following mass transmission. MSDH reported 54 new deaths today, with 32 coming from the past week and 22 from earlier weeks.

Opinion | I fought and bled in Afghanistan. I still think America is right to accept defeat. – The Washington Post

Yet lead them I did, across Afghanistan, witnessing horrors and enduring losses I still struggle to describe. What I saw there convinced me that the awful scenes we are now witnessing were inevitable — and that President Biden deserves credit for nonetheless braving the fallout to do the right thing by our troops.

Disinfection robots and thermal body cameras: welcome to the Covid-free office | Work & careers | The Guardian

More than a dozen other buildings, from the US to Singapore, are in the process of obtaining their Immune certification, according to Liviu Tudor, the CEO of Genesis. The H3 building, as the most protected space so far, acts as the showroom, incorporating all 135 of the recommended measures.

The project is open source “in an effort to pool the best ideas”, says Tudor, who has lodged an application with the EU in the hope it will form the basis for a new standard across the bloc, similar to conventional fire safety codes. It embraces everything from technological innovation and scientific knowledge to workplace psychology, he says, and he hopes it will embolden both employers and employees, millions of whom are now engaged in an intense conversation about whether it is safe to return to the office – and if so, how.

The project is, in effect, Tudor’s attempt to help revive the commercial real estate industry, shunned by investors at the height of the pandemic. He is keenly aware of the risks to his business if companies decide they no longer need, or cannot afford, office space.

South Carolina local GOP leader dies of COVID-19 | TheHill

Although Stutts used the platform to encourage his followers to take the virus seriously, he also voiced his opposition to mask mandates and said people should not be forced to get the vaccine. “Mandates and coercions DO NOT WORK especially when they come to us from a government that has repeatedly lied to the American People time and time again,” Stutts wrote on Facebook.

Hundreds arrested, fined during Australia lockdown protests – The Washington Post

More than 250 people who were protesting coronavirus lockdowns in Australia were arrested Saturday and many faced fines for defying health orders, authorities said. At least seven police officers were treated for injuries after skirmishes broke out at some of the protests, which took place in multiple cities nationwide. The largest and most violent protest was in Melbourne. Many were organized by people in encrypted online chat groups. Sydney has been in lockdown for two months, while Melbourne and the capital, Canberra, went into lockdown earlier this month. Under the rules of the lockdown, people are mostly confined to their homes and have limits placed on their social interactions.
