Idaho begins rationing care as hospitals crumple under COVID load | Ars Technica

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare on Monday activated its “crisis standards of care” in 10 northern hospitals hard-hit by staff shortages, hospital bed shortages, and a “massive increase in patients with COVID-19 who require hospitalization,” the department announced Tuesday.

The crisis standards mean that the quality of care in those hospitals will be reduced for all patients. Resources will be rationed, and patients with the best chances of survival may be prioritized.

Doctor Jekyll y Mister Hyde

Grin. I first read this story in the comic version pictured here from Classic Comics, when I was 9 or 10 years of age.

Mi padre, mi madre… mi madre, mi padre

Miami Herald hits DeSantis on vaccine claims: ‘Profile in selfishness’ | TheHill

“It’s about your health and whether you want that protection or not. It really doesn’t impact me or anyone else,” DeSantis said last week, which the Herald’s editorial board commented on in an editorial piece. “Doesn’t impact anyone else? Talk about a profile in selfishness,” the Herald board wrote. “Almost 46,000 have died of COVID in his state since the pandemic began. Too bad we can’t ask the thousands who have died since vaccines became available if they wished everyone around them had gotten vaccinated.”

Mexico gender parity: Congress is half female, female governors make historic gains – The Washington Post

For the first time, 50 percent of lawmakers in Mexico’s lower house of Congress are women. (That compares with 27 percent in the U.S. House of Representatives.) Women are set to lead nearly a quarter of Mexico’s 32 states, after historic gains in the June midterm elections. In several states, including Sonora, women will outnumber men in local legislatures.

A Perfect Afternoon On Beebee Lake

Michael Stephen Wills Photography

After work on a 2008 Friday afternoon in October we sped over to Beebee Lake on the Cornell University Campus to catch the late afternoon glow.

Beebe Lake is formed by a dam on Fall Creek. It seems to be the flooded meadow it is, surrounded by hills formed by glaciers 10,000 years ago. Cornell maintains footpaths around the lake.

People say that if a couple walk the a mile around the lake and over a bridge at either end, they are destined to be married.  This day we passed only joggers and families.  Pam and I will celebrated our tenth anniversary March 2019, so the legend worked for us.

Here are four snapshots from that time, presented in chronological order. Each is a handheld shot taken on the fly using my Sony Alpha 700 I use for exploratory photography.

Sheriff Villanueva Demotes Challenger Vera, Who Claims Political Retaliation | LAist

But when Vera decided to challenge the sheriff in next year’s election, everything changed. Vera says Villanueva sent him a letter asking him how he could possibly serve as a chief while running against his boss. Last week, the sheriff answered his own question — Vera could not. Villanueva demoted Vera one rank from one of 11 chief positions in the department to commander. He also moved him from the Technology and Support Division to the Court Service Division, considered by some a backwater. ‘Retaliation’ Or A Reasonable Personnel Move? Vera called the move “politically-driven retaliation.” “I think what he wants to do is hurt my campaign in order to bring discredit upon me,” Vera told LAist.
