FEATURE: “Matcha” popularity sees competition brewing among Japan producers

The growing popularity of “matcha”-infused sweets and beverages sold at cafes and pastry shops in Japan is triggering fierce competition amongst green tea producers in their own backyard.

Growers of “tencha,” the green tea leaves grown in particular conditions and processed into the finely ground tea powder used to flavor matcha lattes and an assortment of Japanese confectionery, have intensified production to try to keep up with demand.

Prefectures such as Kagoshima and Shizuoka, which traditionally have mass-produced varieties of tea leaves for Japan’s most popular green tea called “sencha,” have expanded their production, while growers in Kyoto, famous for its matcha “Uji tea” brand, are distributing new matcha varieties more widely.

Afghanistan girls football players flee Taliban rule for Pakistan – The Washington Post

Nearly two dozen female soccer players from Afghanistan have crossed into Pakistan along with their families, joining a growing number of prominent Afghan women and girls fleeing their country amid fears of repression under Taliban rule.

“We welcome Afghanistan Women football team,” Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, Pakistan’s information minister, wrote in a message on Twitter early Wednesday, saying that team members had entered Pakistan at the Torkham border crossing using Pakistani visas.

Khalida Popal, a former captain of Afghanistan’s national women’s soccer team, posted a picture of the border crossing on Twitter early Wednesday, and wrote that with “great support I managed to get more than 79 youth female footballers & family members” out of Afghanistan. She did not immediately respond to a request for more detail on the evacuation effort.

Nacionalni park Keoladeo, Indija – Keoladeo National Park, India

Myrela

International Day Of Democracy

bluejayblog

Various pundits around the world will likely editorialize and otherwise communicate their opinions about democracy more than usual today. The United Nations sanctioned International Day of Democracy is a time to review the state of democracy. The intent is to promote the viability and availability of democracy to everyone in the world. The stated goals are to promote and protect freedom and human rights in conjunction with the principle of periodic, genuine elections by all citizens.

When pondering the concept of democracy, we remember that people must take mindful care of it because democracy is actually quite fragile. It is susceptible to demagoguery and scare tactics. Fear is poison to the democratic process. We must be careful not to create scapegoats so as to not allow irresponsible abridgement of human rights.

When basic democratic institutions such as universal suffrage and reasoned debate are threatened we are in danger of falling…

Pompeja, Italija – Pompeii, Italy

Myrela
