Lake Powell hydropower at risk as water levels plunge, says BLM

  • Major reservoirs like Lake Powell and Lake Mead, which store water from the Colorado River, are experiencing a major decline in water levels thanks to a megadrought exacerbated by climate change.
  • The Bureau of Land Management projects 3% chance that Lake Powell’s water levels fall below the minimum level necessary for the lake’s Glen Canyon Dam to generate hydroelectricity next year. In 2023, the chance of a power shutdown jumps to 34%.
  • Other large bodies of water in the U.S. West have also hit record lows this year and triggered concern about power generation, including Lake Oroville in California.

Artemisinin-resistant malaria detected in Uganda | CIDRAP (Me: Problem… mosquitoes do not recognize human geographical boundaries)

A study today in the New England Journal of Medicine reports evidence of emerging artemisinin-resistant malaria in Uganda, a potentially worrisome development for Africa.

Conducted at a hospital in Northern Uganda, where malaria transmission is high, the study found that 5.8% of malaria patients treated with an artemisinin derivative from 2017 through 2019 had evidence of slow parasite clearance, which can be a sign of partial resistance to artemisinin. Further analysis of parasite DNA samples from patient blood samples identified genetic mutations associated with delayed parasite clearance and artemisinin resistance.

Artemisinin and artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs) are the most effective and widely used treatment for malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite and have greatly contributed to global reductions in malaria deaths and complications. While artemisinin resistance is widespread in the Greater Mekong Subregion of Southeast Asia, experts fear it could have a devastating impact in Africa, where 90% of malaria cases and deaths are reported.

“Our findings suggest a potential risk of cross-border spread across Africa and highlight the need to perform large-scale surveys,” the team of researchers from Uganda and Japan wrote.

Creeping Neo-Fascism

In Saner Thought

I remember the days when the country was warned about the ‘creeping socialism’ of the American Left….the ‘creeping’ was more like an anemic crawl……but now this country has a new ‘creeper’ it should be more worried about……that of ‘creeping Neo-fascism’…..

Do not get me wrong I do not like labeling those as ‘fascists’ just like I do not appreciate the label ‘socialist’….but the GOP seems to be heading in a direction we have seen before.

The way to fight this trend is to fight the neo-liberal trend….

Neoliberalism can be defined as a political approach that “seeks to transfer the control of economic factors from the public sector to the private sector” — and strives to “place limits on government spending, government regulation, and public ownership.” Neoliberalism can be described more candidly as vast, systemic, nonstop plunder.

The plunder is enmeshed in politics. In the real world, economic power is…

Federal judge says Florida ban on “sanctuary cities” racially motivated – Axios

A federal judge on Tuesday struck down parts of a Florida law aimed at banning local governments from establishing sanctuary city policies, arguing in part that the law is racially motivated and that it has the support of hate groups.

Why it matters: In a 110-page ruling issued Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom said the law — signed and championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) — violates the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause because it was adopted with discriminatory motives.

A donkey worked very hard for an old man for years. The donkey was getting old and was no longer as fast as his young days; but, he was still loyal and tried hard to be able to do the usual daily tasks so he wouldn’t be a burden for the old man.

One day, the donkey fell into a deep well in the old man’s farm.

The old man ran towards the sound of the donkey’s cry. When he got to the well, he realized getting the donkey out would be impossible.

He said to himself: “In any case, I’ve wanted to buy a young donkey since this one is already old. And I’ve long wanted to fill in this dried well and dig a new one. I will kill two birds with one stone. I’ll fill in the well and bury the…
