LANDBACK Friends

New or worsening catastrophes seem to be coming at us daily. Worse things than we can imagine are yet to come. When I say “we” in most cases I mean white people since many things below are race related.

I often think of what Albert Einstein said, “problems cannot be solved with the same mind set that created them.”

There are several reasons I’ve been praying, thinking, and writing about the precarious place we are at now. We need to build alternatives to the systems of capitalism, materialism, militarism, incarceration, racism, and white supremacy. Systems rooted in stolen lands and stolen labor. Not only because they are founded on injustice, but because these systems are failing now. (See: Time for a reset)

Any chance we have to address these injustices and mitigate these dangers requires changing our mind set. Looking back over my life it seems like an endless struggle…

The Truth Matters

We must believe, we must support, we must champion these courageous people around the world who seek and report the facts, the truth, at whatever cost to their reputations, their careers, and in some instances, their very llves.

The Nobel Prize Committee thinks enough of journalism to see it as important to the peace process. So should we.

just drive, will you?

A positive news item I think worth sharing:

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded Friday to two journalists, Maria Ressa of the Philippines, and Dmitri Muratov of Russia, for their indefatigable pursuit of the truth, in the face of the most severe efforts to suppress it.

According to the New York Times:

“The journalists…were recognized for “their courageous fight for freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.”

“They are representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal in a world in which democracy and freedom of the press face increasingly adverse conditions,” the committee said in a statement released after the announcement in Oslo…

“The Nobel committee chose from 329 candidates, one of the largest pools in the 126-year history of the prize. Those who had been considered favorites for this year included climate change activists, political dissidents and scientists whose work helped…

Revealed: anti-vaccine TikTok videos being viewed by children as young as nine | TikTok | The Guardian

Lies and conspiracy theories about Covid-19, which have amassed millions of views and are accessible to young children, have remained on the social media platform TikTok for weeks after it was alerted to them, the Guardian has learned.

TikTok accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers that discourage vaccination and peddle myths about Covid survival rates were uncovered by NewsGuard, an organisation that monitors online misinformation.

Newsguard said it published its findings in June and sent them to the UK Government and WHO. They raised concerns about some of the content directly with TikTok last month, but it remained on the platform.

The revelation comes amid renewed concern about the impact that social media is having on young people, after it was reported that Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, had internal research showing its app was harming teenagers.

Indian Arms Exporter Ships Air-Defense Weapons to Myanmar’s Junta (Me: Shame on India – support people not the illegal Junta!)

Indian arms manufacturer Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) exported a remote-controlled, air-defense station to Myanmar in July, said Justice for Myanmar (JFM), an activist group that monitors the military’s businesses.

The shipment was made through Mega Hill General Trading Co based in Myanmar, said JFM, citing Panjiva, a global trade data company based in New York.

According to Panjiva, the shipment included a gun mount and an optical device.

The BEL has made multiple shipments to Myanmar’s military for a coastal surveillance system since the Feb. 1 coup.

APO Group – Africa Newsroom / Press release | Coronavirus: United States Provides Additional $4 Million for Urgent COVID-19 Assistance in Botswana

The United States Government—through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) —announces an additional $4 million in urgent COVID-19 assistance funding for Botswana. This additional assistance from the historic American Rescue Plan Act builds on more than $8.4 million in COVID-19 assistance to Botswana since the pandemic first emerged. This assistance supports the Government of Botswana to strengthen infection prevention and control in communities and at health facilities, establish vaccination sites, strengthen surveillance at border crossings, provide support for isolation facilities for COVID-19 patients, and support the Government of Botswana’s planning efforts.

“We will continue to do all we can – whether it be through our vaccine donations or through U.S. global health funding – to build a world that is safer and more secure against the threat of infectious disease,” said U.S. Ambassador Cloud.
