Will Degrowth Replace Green Growth? — Heliocene

Barbara Crane Navarro

Degrowth is a ludicrous idea to many business people. Yet, it is beginning to be spoken about by science and non governmental business influencers who have strong mainstream credibility. This mirrors early patterns of attention given to climate change decades ago, when mass industrial decarbonisation seemed absurd. Degrowth Is The New Conversation What is Degrowth?[…]

Reflections on Indigenous Peoples’ Day: We Are The Dreams of Our Ancestors… What Future Are We Dreaming Into Reality? — SM(Art) Bombs Comics

Barbara Crane Navarro

‘La Madre Mariposa’ an original artwork by Laura R. Morris, 2021. Today is Indigenous People’s Day in the lands now known as the United States. I wish to express Gratitude to my Indigenous relatives. I recognize that my (mostly) European ancestors would have died had they not been shown mercy. Because of those first acts[…]

Esperança

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

Leon County, Florida, Was Fined Millions for Its Vaccine Mandate. Folks Are Pissed.

Despite threats from the state, Leon County Administrator Vice Long instituted a vaccine requirement for his employees in July. On Oct. 6, the Florida Department of Health Division Director Douglas Woodlief notified Long he was in violation of the law after the county fired several employees for refusing to comply with the mandate.

Some state officials expressed their outrage over the fine. Rep. Ramon Alexander (D-Tallahassee) called it “an overreach of state government,” while Sen. Loranne Ausley (D-Tallahassee) blasted DeSantis for “spending his time punishing counties working to keep their citizens safe.”

“Unbelievable!” Ausley said in a statement. “We don’t need the State bullying our communities or private businesses who are simply trying to serve the people and get on the other side of this pandemic. It’s going to take all of us standing together to make this happen.”

Long said he hadn’t even heard about the health department’s decision until he saw media reports on it.

“There is a genuine disagreement about the applicability of the statute and rule, and the County will enforce its rights using any remedies available at law, if necessary,” Long said.

Leon County residents are also pissed about the fine.

“It’s all just political posturing,” Christopher Link, a Tallahassee resident, told The Daily Beast on Tuesday. “ It makes no sense and only hurts the taxpayer. The fact that the better good for the health of the state is so wrongly politicized is insane. The crazies have taken over, really.”

Another Tallahassee resident, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of professional retaliation, told The Daily Beast that she “wished the fight was against stopping the coronavirus—not against political leaders who feel like they have to appease their base.”

“This pandemic has been going on for over a year, and I’ve never really felt like the priority in Florida was about saving lives. Just careers,” the resident added.

Well, you wake up in the mornin’, you hear the work bell ring…
And they march you to the table, you see the same old thing
Ain’t no food upon the table, and no pork up in the pan
But you better not complain, boy, you get in trouble with the man
Let the Midnight Special shine a light on me
….
Let the Midnight Special shine ‘er ever-lovin’ light on me
Yonder come Miss Rosie, how in the world did you know?
By the way she wears her apron and the clothes she wore
Umbrella on her shoulder, piece of paper in her hand
She come to see the gov’nor, she want to free her man, oh

Let the Midnight Special shine ‘er ever-lovin’ light on me
If you’re ever in Houston, well, you better do right
You better not gamble there, you better not fight, Lord
Or the…

Let’s demonstrate where power truly lies

LANDBACK Friends

It is heartening to see indigenous-led climate actions at the White House, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the US Capitol this week. I admire those who are participating in acts of civil disobedience, with hundreds of arrests. But disappointed in the absence of a response from the Biden administration. And deeply concerned at the latest news that funding to address environmental catastrophe might not be included in the budget negotiations. White House looks to scale back climate initiative after stiff pushback from Manchin

I’m reminded of the days of the Keystone XL pipeline Pledge of Resistance, a national campaign to use civil disobedience to force denial of the permit for the construction of that pipeline which began in 2013. President Obama, with Vice President Biden, did deny the permit. The President was aware of the Keystone resistance. How much that affected his decision isn’t known. (more below).

This week over…
