Finger Lakes National Forest 3

Michael Stephen Wills Photography

In the long history of this forested ridge two Iroquois tribes relied on this land for tree nuts and hunting, the soil did not support agriculture. After the Revolutionary War, the British siding Iroquois tribes were driven away and the land given as one mile square blocks to soldiers, in payment for service. During the Depression era, many of these farms were abandoned and others sold to the Federal government.

Today, there is a patchwork of private land and National Forest. This line of color marks the forest boundary on the eastern ridge side.

The Tunnel

Weekend Stories by Trishikh

Deep in the bowels of the Eastern Ghats Mountain Range nestled the small and obscure village of Cheenna Gato, meaning a tiny hole in the native tribal dialect, a mix of the Odiya and Telugu languages. The year is 1960, and while the rest of the world celebrated many human advancements, the villagers of this tiny jungle-mountain settlement remained happy with their secluded existence. Ramaloo and Anantamma, along with their eight-year-old twin girls Daksha and Aadrika, lived on the fringe of this heavenly little hamlet.

On one pleasant morning, a massive and thunderous sound shattered the tranquillity of this peaceful village. Anantamma rushed out of the hut throwing down the basket of leafy vegetables that she was inspecting to prepare lunch. Daksha and Aadrika, who were playing with little dolls made of mud, ran towards their mother in scare. A startled Ramaloo looked towards the sky, letting go of his…

Proof Of Vaccination At Restaurants, Gyms And More Begins Monday | LAist

Starting Monday, patrons of indoor restaurants, gyms, museums, beauty salons and recreation centers in Los Angeles County will have to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.

The rule — one of the strictest mandates in the country — kicked in for L.A. County bars and breweries on Friday.

Businesses are tasked with checking vaccination status before letting customers inside, and will be required to cross-check vaccination proof with photo IDs for patrons who are 18 or over.

Proof of vaccination can include:

  • a vaccination card issued by a health care provider,
  • a vaccination card issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
  • a similar documentation from a foreign governmental agency for visitors from other countries,
  • a photocopy of a vaccination card,
  • a photograph of that card stored on your phone, or
  • a digital COVID-19 vaccination record issued by the State of California or another state.

Why tackling deforestation is so important for slowing climate change —

Barbara Crane Navarro

Humanity injects an almost incomprehensible 42 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere every year. The majority of this comes from burning fossil fuels, but a substantial portion, about 16%, arises from how we use the land. Most of these land-use emissions are caused by deforestation, particularly[…]
