Houston doctor suspended from hospital for spreading Covid misinformation | Coronavirus | The Guardian

A doctor was suspended by a Houston hospital for spreading misinformation about Covid-19.

Houston Methodist hospital said Dr Mary Bowden, an ear, throat, and nose specialist, spread “dangerous misinformation” about Covid and shared personal and professional opinions the hospital deemed “harmful to the community”.

Bowden, a recent hire, posted several tweets stating that she was against Covid-19 vaccine mandates.

She also used Twitter to promote Ivermectin as a treatment for Covid-19, despite several public health officials having warned the public not to use the anti-parasitic drug, which has uses in humans and animals, as a coronavirus treatment…

The harmonious US city run by Muslim Americans – BBC News

Over the last 30 years, Hamtramck transformed again, to become a landing pad for Arab and Asian immigrants, notably those from Yemen and Bangladesh. A significant portion of the city’s residents today – 42% – are foreign born. More than half are believed to be practising Muslims.

The newly elected government’s makeup reflects the changing demographics in Hamtramck. The city council will include two Bengali Americans, three Yemeni Americans and a Polish American convert to Islam.

Winning 68% of the vote, Amer Ghalib will be the first Yemeni-American mayor in the US.

“I feel honoured and proud, but I know it’s a big responsibility,” Mr Ghalib, 41, said.

Born in a village in Yemen, he moved to the US when he was 17, first working in a factory making plastic car parts near Hamtramck. He later learned English and received medical training, and now works as a healthcare professional.

Rather than being a “melting pot” or “salad bowl”, Hamtramck is more like a “seven-layer cake” where different groups retain their distinct cultures while closely co-existing with each other, said city councilmember-elect Amanda Jaczkowski. “People are still proud of their culture specifically, whereas if it’s assimilation, we would lose the uniqueness.”

“When you live this close to each other, you are forced to overcome those differences, “Ms Jaczkowski, 29, said…

Justice Department Announces More Than $73 Million to Help Crime Victims and Improve Public Safety in American Indian and Alaska Native Communities | OPA | Department of Justice

The Department of Justice today announced that it will award 137 grants to 85 American Indian and Alaska Native communities, for a total of $73 million, to improve public safety and serve crime victims. The announcement was made during the White House Tribal Nations Summit taking place virtually today and tomorrow.

These funds are designed to help enhance tribal justice systems and strengthen law enforcement, improve the handling of child abuse cases, combat domestic violence and support tribal youth programs.

“The Justice Department is pleased to make the Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation available to federally recognized tribes, providing a transparent and simple process to apply for grants that best align with their community’s needs,” said Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta. “This one-step application makes it possible for tribes to access critical resources to help them meet the critical public safety needs of their communities.”

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland Delivers Remarks at the 2021 White House Tribal Nations Summit | OPA | Department of Justice

…When it comes to building on our nation-to-nation partnership, we understand the importance of open, honest conversations approached with respect, humility and sincerity. This means listening to you as leaders of your governments and representatives of your citizens. It also means responding respectfully to the thoughtful recommendations and information that you share with us.

That is why the department has already held six major Tribal consultations this year — more than in any previous year. Establishing and maintaining strong lines of communication is particularly important when it comes to fulfilling our responsibility to act as partners in making Tribal communities safer.

We acknowledge that our country has historically failed to meet the crisis of missing or murdered Indigenous people with the urgency and the resources it demands. We also recognize that solving this crisis requires that we work in partnership with one another. The President’s Executive Order will build on and expand our efforts to do exactly that.

Section 2 of the Executive Order requires the development of a comprehensive strategy for federal law enforcement’s efforts to prevent and respond to violence against Native Americans. We are eager to work with Secretary of the Interior Haaland to develop this plan. Earlier this year, Secretary Haaland and I announced that we will be creating the joint commission, the one required by the Not Invisible Act, to address the persistent violence endured by Native American families and communities.

Today, the Justice Department will announce the launch of a steering committee to address the crisis of missing or murdered Indigenous people. The committee will be co-chaired by the Office of the Deputy Attorney General and the Office of Tribal Justice. It will work with other agencies to develop the comprehensive plan that will be due to the President.

Under Section 3 of the Executive Order, the Justice Department will work with the Interior Department and other agencies to develop guidance and technical assistance on several issues, including the development of Tribal Community Response Plans.

The Justice Department has already started piloting these plans, which are driven by community needs, led by Tribes and supported by federal law enforcement. It is our hope that we will advance meaningful responses to cases of missing or murdered Indigenous people and serve as a blueprint moving forward…

Hillside destruction near Green Island, Hanover, Jamaica — Petchary’s Blog

The parish of Hanover is the smallest on the island, but has a distinct charm of its own. As the road winds along the coastline, there are lovely views of small coves, the calm waters fringed deeply with mangroves on one side. On the other side of the road are hilly pastures, some with Spanish […]
