Forests for sale: How land traffickers profit by slicing up Bolivia’s protected areas
- Shortly after Bolivia’s Bajo Paraguá Municipal Protected Area was established in February 2021, authorities began receiving reports of invasions and deforestation in and around the new protected area.
- Local sources say land traffickers are illegally buying up plots of protected land to resell, often repeatedly, to third parties.
- Mongabay spoke with one of these third parties, a man who said he purchased access to land in Bajo Paraguá from land traffickers before being evicted by the same traffickers so that they could sell the land to someone else.
- The man said traffickers have resorted to threats of violence to intimidate local communities from reporting incursions.

Quick-Fried Potatoes
What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? The Food Whisperer: Quick-Fried Potatoes! My favorite breakfast consists of eggs-over-easy, pan-fried potatoes, and crispy bacon. I love it when the warm runny yolks gush over the buttery chunks of Idaho potatoes, seasoned just right. I learned a long time ago the secret to perfect hash browns. Begin with baked potatoes. My sister-in-law gleaned that little secret from a restaurant where she worked. Thankfully, anyone can bake a potato in five minutes by using the microwave. Just don’t forget to pierce it first.
QUICK-FRIED POTATOES

1/2 yellow onion, sliced
2 teaspoons olive oil
1/8 teaspoon seasoned salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes

“80th story”
First Published: Feb.28.2019
A high school teacher started her class with a story:

“A couple went on a cruise to spend quality time together.

The ship hit a seamount and instigated a big hole. Water was pouring into the ship uncontrollably. Everyone was rushing towards the lifeboats.

When the couple got closer to the last lifeboat, they realized there was only one space left. The husband jumped into the lifeboat and it left immediately. The wife was devastated as she stared at the lifeboat and shouted: …….”

The teacher paused and said: “What do you think she shouted?”
Many students had different answers.
One said: “She probably said ‘I hate you.’”

Others said: “She definitely said ‘I wasted my life with you.’”
– “Thanks for leaving me behind.”
– “Men!”
And more….

The teacher continued: “She shouted ‘take care of our daughter.”
Years passed and that man took…

Thoughtful Thursdays, Stayed on Freedom’s Call page 39, and Learn By Singing
Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better
What steps do you think we can take to make our history more inclusive of all of our stories?
I started my own walking singing tour company in the belief that song was a powerful way to help make this happen. Some of what I learned is in my book Stayed on Freedom’s Call (last week was page 38…):

That corner, across from “Meigs Red Barn”, as the Old Pension Office was known, is where this walking tour of about 2.5 hours, begins.
