Useful news for all to advance knowledge of the world and how it works

December 1944 (2) Leyte

Pacific Paratrooper

16 December – Douglas MacArthur was promoted to Five-Star General. It seemed that General MacArthur’s promotion to General of the Army would require assistance from many sides. It posed a problem in the respect that there was no such object as a five-star insignia in existence in the Pacific. A clever Filipino silversmith created one from a miscellaneous collection of Dutch, Australian and Filipino coins.

Deck of the USS Anzio during Typhoon Cobra

17 December – Typhoon Cobra hit the Philippine Islands. TF-38 was caught off-guard and the destroyers, USSHull, MonghamandSpencewere sunk and 22 other vessels received damage. While 150 aircraft were blown off the decks of the carriers, more than 750 sailors drowned.

19 December – Adm. Nimitz was made Commander-in-Chief of the US Pacific Fleet and Pacific Areas, thereby promoting him to Fleet Admiral of the US Navy, a 5-Star Admiral.

Minbari Mondays, Knives, and, Empathy in The B5 Triangle

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This this week, there is no report from Ranger Mayann.  The Great Machine on Epsilon 3 must have a problem, Houston…

So, my very short review for this week is that empathy is the most important means of communication between members of other species, and between ourselves, too!  In the end, both Londo’s problem with his long time friend, and Captain Sheridan’s problem with his new invisible friend have the same solution:  empathy.

Too bad Londo didn’t figure that out sooner.

The Junkyard gives a more traditional plot and character perspective of this episode.

Last week’s review was of the season 2, episode And Now for A Word,

Next week’s review will be (in Lurker’s Guide order) In the Shadow of Z’ha’dum…

Čan Čan, Peru – Chan Chan, Peru

Vivaldi translation of introduction: Like a real labyrinth of mud erected in the middle of the desert, Chan Chan had to be one of the most impressive and luxurious cities of pre-Columbian cultures in Peru. Chan Chan, the seat of the ruler of the kingdom of Chimu, was the great capital of the real empire, which at its peak stretched nearly 1,300 kilometers along the northern coast of Peru.

Myrela
