Crowdsourcing for science

Darcy Hitchcock

Science in this country tends to be under-funded, dependent on government grants, and tied to sluggish institutions. So what if there were a Kickstarter for science research? Voila, Experiment.com.

Robert Downey, Jr. (yes, the actor turned activist) is involved in an effort called the FootPrint Coalition using the Experiment platform to fund projects related to environmental justice.

We are in the business of supporting entrepreneurial scientists and we are in agreement that the major impediments are the obvious limitations of decision-making by committee. We’re trying something different. FootPrint Coalition is funding early research in brand new environmental fields, and doing it under the direction of esteemed Science Leads who can move quickly and fund at their discretion. The FootPrint Coalition Science Engine builds off suggestions made in the Funding Risky Research paper. It operationalizes the “loose-play funding for early-stage risky explorations” but doesn’t bind it to universities.

Snarky Snippets Returns!!! | Filosofa’s Word

It seems that every time I log onto any of the news media sites, I am driven to gnashing my teeth and muttering expletives under my breath … or sometimes on top of my breath, which explains how my cat learned the “f-word”!  There is just so damn much to be angry about these days,…

Considering Oxymora

bluejayblog

I enjoy the fact that the word oxymoron is, itself, an oxymoron. Its two Greek root words are the adjectives oskús {sharp} and morōs {dull}. We use oxymorons to cast doubt as to the rationality of claims or as a clever literary device. Whenever we notice a group of words that appear to be contradictory, it’s important not to mistake antonym pairs, paradoxes, and contradictions in terms for oxymorons.

To set the record straight, an antonym pair is a grammatical device that uses two words with opposite meanings such as “dark to light”–not an oxymoron. One common error is to label the term “military intelligence” as an oxymoron. Used in a snide manner, “military intelligence” is a contradiction in terms. We know that paradoxes are not mere grammatical devices. Paradoxes are ideas that might or might not be oxymorons. One paradox that is also an oxymoron is the Simon and…
