US adds over 250,000 jobs in September, defying fears of slowdown | US economy | The Guardian

American employers added 254,000 jobs last month in the penultimate jobs report before the US election, defying fears of a slowdown in the labor market.

Job creation unexpectedly accelerated in September, while the headline unemployment rate slipped to 4.1% from 4.2% in August.

Economists had forecast a non-farm payrolls reading of around 132,500 for September, after a cooler summer of employment growth.

Hiring instead rose sharply from recent months. In August employers added 159,000 jobs, and in July, they added 144,000.

FEMA doesn’t have funding through hurricane season, warns Mayorkas | Hurricane Helene | The Guardian – (Me: GOP thinks North Carolina, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina can ‘wait’ for aid and assistance…)

House speaker Mike Johnson has signaled that supplemental funding would come from Congress, but that the body would not convene immediately to pass it. He predicted more funding would come after election day, when Congress returns from its recessPolitico reported, and that “it will take some time to tabulate” the extent of the damage.

Other Republicans have suggested that Fema has enough funding.

…Senator John Kennedy, a hard-right Republican from Louisiana and a member of the Senate appropriations committee, told the Hill. “We’ll talk about it in December, particularly if we keep having natural disasters.”

Biden rebuffed the suggestion that additional funds could wait, telling reporters on Thursday while touring affected areas in Florida and Georgia: “Can’t wait. People need help now.”

US supreme court will rule on $10bn suit Mexico filed against US gun makers | US supreme court | The Guardian (Me: Attention JD Vance… it is American guns that get trafficked to Mexico, not the reverse as you claimed!!!)

The US supreme court said on Friday it will decide whether to block a $10bn lawsuit Mexico filed against US gun manufacturers and distributors that argues that their negligent and illegal commercial practices have unleashed bloodshed in the country.

The lawsuit, filed in Boston in August, names Smith & Wesson, Barrett Firearms, Beretta, Colt and Glock, as well as Boston-area wholesaler Interstate Arms.

The Mexican government says it wants to “put an end to the massive damage that the Defendants cause by actively facilitating the unlawful trafficking of their guns to drug cartels and other criminals in Mexico”.

Mexico says 70% of the weapons trafficked to Mexico come from the US, according to the foreign affairs ministry. In 2019 alone, at least 17,000 homicides were linked to trafficked weapons, it has said.

“No administration has helped Israel more than I have. None. None, none. And I think Bibi should remember that,” Biden said, using Netanyahu’s nickname. He added: “And whether he’s trying to influence the election, I don’t know – but I’m not counting on that.”

Buttigieg counters Musk claim of Fema blocking Starlink from hurricane relief | Elon Musk | The Guardian

When reached for comment on Musk’s allegations, Fema issued a statement similar to Buttigieg’s: “The claims about FEMA confiscating or taking commodities, supplies or resources in North Carolina, Tennessee, or any state impacted by Helene are false.

“FEMA has helped provide Starlink terminals to the state of North Carolina, including to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation and critical lifeline locations as determined by the state. These units are supporting state and local municipalities, Urban Search and Rescue and disaster coordination. Starlink units have been sent to multiple states in support of Hurricane Helene response efforts,” said Jaclyn Rothenberg, FEMA director of public affairs.
