Birmingham Civil Rights Movement | Soul Of America | Birmingham

Shortly after the Montgomery Bus Boycott ended successfully in 1957, Rev. Shuttlesworth invited Rev. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. to Birmingham to become the “Voice of the Civil Rights Movement.” Reverends Fred Shuttlesworth, Martin Luther King, Jr., AD King (Martin’s brother), Ralph D Abernathy, Wyatt T Walker, Andrew Young and others forged Project C for “Confrontation” at meetings held in their churches and AG Gaston Motel.

By 1960, Birmingham became Ground Zero for Confrontation in the Civil Rights Movement when a plummeting steel market and job loss played right into the hands of evildoers. The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) galvanized poor European Americans against African Americans and Jewish Americans. Birmingham’s other citizens stood by as churches and homes in the Black and Jewish communities were bombed. Birmingham had so many church bombings from 1957-1964 that it had a well-earned nickname, “Bombingham.” Definitely not the marketing slogan civic boosters wanted.

Masks: The Best Commentary Yet

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

Professor Martin Blaser, a microbiologist at Rutgers University and the director of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine, has this to say about wearing masks:

On the effectiveness of masks:

“It has been known for some time that all masks are not created equal,” said Blaser. “N95s, when properly fitted, can reduce the transmission by more than 95 percent of the very tiny particles that are 0.3 micrometers in size, which carry the virus from one person to the next. That is the gold standard.”

“On surgical masks, the pore size is bigger so more particles can go through, but since they are 2-ply, the two layers work together to trap a sizeable portion of viral particles,” he explained. “Cloth masks can be 1-ply and the pore sizes are bigger. They still offer some good protection, but if the exposure is very high, there will be some actual…

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Holiday Observance Day, and his Work — Inspiring Critical Thinking and Community via Books, Lessons, and Story

The common good was what Dr. King worked for, and reminded us, in his speech at Riverside, and in his last book,  that “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice that produces beggars needs restructuring.”    Zut […]

“Conatus”un İzinde ve Dahi Ötesinde

KAYIPDefter(arşiv)

Felsefe, matematiğin sözcük düzenleri üzerine birebir izdüşümüdür; yani matematik aksiyomları felsefede de geçerlidir.

İnsan düşüncesi hep bir özgül ağırlık taşır. Sorular, sorgular hikmet sevgisini tetikler.

Honouring Dr. Martin Luther King …

Filosofa's Word

Today is Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday in the United States to honour one of the greatest men who ever lived in this country.  I first wrote this tribute to Dr. King in 2017, and each year I reprise it, with slight changes or minor additions, for I find that it still says exactly what I wish to say.  Given the increase in racism in the United States in recent years, I think the above quote seems more apt today than ever before.  So please, take just a minute to, if nothing else, listen once again to Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.  In these troubled times, it is good to be reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream.  More than ever, I wish we had a few Dr. Martin Luther Kings fighting for equality and justice for all today.

“Our lives begin to end the day…
