Many protesters have taken to the streets of Russian cities to condemn President Vladimir Putin’s monstrous invasion of Ukraine…   AND REPUBLICANS PRAISE PUTIN… — Here’s A Thing…

Lolsys Library

Many protesters have taken to the streets of Russian cities to condemn President Vladimir Putin’s monstrous invasion of Ukraine.  But where are the Republican voices rising in protest against the likes of former President Trump, Mike Pompeo and Tucker Carlson and their fawning praise of the Russian dictator? What moral cowards they are — unless, of course, they […]

Parashat VaYaK’hel, and Resting in Community?

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This week’s Torah portion is Parashat Vayakhel /  וַיַּקְהֵל

Parashat Vayakhel is the 23rd sedra (portion) in the annual cycle, and the 10th (second to last) in the book of Sh’mot/Exodus.  But normally, this parashah is doubled up and read together with Parashat P’kudei.  Since this year is a Leap Year on the Hebrew calendar, it’s one of the rare-ish years when these two parshiot are read separately.  So, the Trienniel cycle folks should be reading most or all of this parashah this year, I imagine, but have not checked.

This week, resting, and giving back to community are the main themes.  So, yes, rest is important, not just individually, but together, with others in mind, and even with others.  Then there is the work of community, via donation of time, skill, other resources, and of helping by every means possible to house and care for…

CRAIN'S COMMENTS

We have an outbreak of avian flu (Eurasian H5N1) in wild bird population in the Eastern US. There are guesses as to the source of the outbreak, which has spread to and decimated some farm flocks of chickens and turkeys.(1)

This flu can kill a turkey within six hours of initial symptoms.

Thus far, there is no evidence of human infection by this virus. However, the last time avian flu did cross over, it killed 60% of those who were infected.

Meanwhile, we’re waiting to see how Omicron BA.2 unfolds. The most recent data, posted on February 22, shows it as being 3.9% of reported new cases. If that doubles at the next reading, it would indicate another wild ride ahead. It spreads 30% more easily than the original Omicron, and causes more severe illness. BA.2 has triggered another surge in Covid infections in Denmark.

Stay tuned for updates.

CÓMO DUELE

Ventana literaria

CÓMO DUELE

Duele, duele fuerte
que al otro lado del continente
esos viejos que se conocen y odian
no estén en primera línea
para sentir el terror de la guerra

Duele, duele fuerte
que muchos que no se conocen ni se odian
acaban matándose por caprichos ajenos
mientras al rededor unos buscan refugios
porque les han quitado la paz.

Duele y duele mucho
cuando gente sin experiencia
toma las armas para defender su patria
y muchos esposos, tíos, hermanos y jóvenes
tal vez no retornen y solo queden
esposas viudas y niños huérfanos.

Cómo duele…
cuando madres dan la vida por defender
esa bendita tierra que los vio nacer
y ahora queda la incertidumbre,
una herida y campos de noches eternas.
