Hugging The Nature

Kaushal Kishore

When it comes to trees and nature, animals are also seen in full solidarity with human beings. Nature works as the best cementing force. Just see the two pictures below:

This reminds me of Chipko (to hug or cling) movement, one of the strongest movements to conserve forests in India, that was started in 70s in the Himalayan region of the present Uttarakhand state, originally by the villagers, especially women, by organising themselves under several smaller groups.

The activists resorted to chipko or tree-hugging, as a means of non-violent protest against felling of trees by the government-backed timber merchants. They used the tactic of embracing trees to impede loggers. They showed how the environment was a matter of life and death for them.

The Gandhian activist, Shri Sundarlal Bahuguna gave this movement a voice and proper direction. He coined the slogan, “Ecology is the permanent economy.” The movement under…

Rep. Matt Gaetz Votes Against Capping Insulin Prices, Says People Should Just Lose Weight – Mother Jones

Among those voting “no” was Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), the GOP’s leading troll, who has come up with perhaps one of the most offensive justifications for GOP opposition to the popular bill. In his newsletter Friday, Gaetz told his constituents that he opposed the bill because fat people, not Big Pharma, are responsible for driving up the cost of insulin. He suggested that Type 2 diabetes, which is often linked to obesity, could be cured if only people would workout more and lose weight, at which point they wouldn’t need insulin anymore and the drug costs would fall without government intervention. Gaetz wrote:

While Democrat posturing of H.R. 6833 victimizes insulin payees as people with an uncontrollable disease that are being taken advantage of and need Big Brother to throw them a raft, lifestyle changes en masse would expeditiously lower demand and the subsequent prices of insulin. 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which “can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating healthy food, and being active.” Arbitrary price controls are no substitute for individual weight control. Since 2000, the number of diabetes cases in the U.S. has nearly doubled. The demand for insulin has increased and the requisite price increase has followed suit. In other words, the price of insulin increases as waistlines increase.

Polio outbreak in Israel caused by lack of vaccinations – Knesset – The Jerusalem Post

The recent outbreak of polio cases in Israel has been caused by a lack of vaccination against the disease, Head of Public Health Services Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis told a Knesset Health Committee meeting on Sunday.

Eight children have been diagnosed with polio in the country since a four-year-old in the Jerusalem area was discovered to have symptoms on March 8. Since then, the Health Ministry has launched an extensive operation to detect new cases and bring up rates of vaccination in communities and areas where they are low.

During a Sunday Health Committee meeting led by MK Idit Silman, Alroy-Preis offered insight into the challenges that health officials are facing in trying to contain any potential outbreak of the disease.

“It is a challenge for several reasons,” she explained. “First, due to fake news, suddenly everything has a question mark over it. Even vaccines that we have had for years and that we’ve seen eliminate diseases, suddenly they are being questioned.”

The other key reason, she added, is that there is a lack of logistical planning due to frequent school closures endured by the education system over the last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
