The Importance of Teaching Public Speaking in Schools

Not everyone’s cup of tea but for those who can pull it off – good. As an instructor of English composition, I simply made reading aloud short essays part of the course – and that helped their writing as well as speaking.

Blind Injustice

When I tell friends that I was on my high school’s speech and debate team, and that more specifically, I did something called extemporaneous speaking—a category where I had to make and then deliver a speech on a current events topic I drew in just half an hour—they tend to be horrified at the thought of trying to do the same thing, impressed that I was able to do this, or a little bit of both. Then, when I add that this experience with speech and debate significantly improved my comfort level with public speaking, some of the people who hear this say that they are so terrified of public speaking.

And it’s not just anecdotal experience that has shown me that a lot of us are afraid of public speaking. A survey of Americans’ top fears in 2020-21 found that 29% were either afraid or very afraid of public…

“They’ve left us to eat stones now:” The latest Vice News film on the impacts of bauxite mining in Jamaica

Petchary's Blog

Last month, the U.S.-based Vice News posted a second video on the community response to bauxite mining in Jamaica. The Jamaica Environment Trust is reminding us to watch it; the YouTube link is here. The 20-minute report is a follow-up to their 2021 feature, which you can find here. As of May 2, the video has more than 200,000 views and over 1,000 comments.

Yes, we are talking about the community; people. The film also interviews the Maroon Chief of Accompany, Chief Currie – to some Jamaicans a controversial figure, and refers to the Maroons’ claims of sovereignty, as an indigenous people. Whatever you think about the Maroons, Chief Currie and the Cockpit Country residents are not the only Jamaicans affected by bauxite mining. There are many other examples – for example, those living near to the Rio Cobre, which has been polluted by another bauxite…

Texas Gov. Abbott’s border inspections prompt Mexico to move lucrative trade link to New Mexico

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) 10-day-long “enhanced” safety inspections of commercial trucks entering the state from Mexico may have cost Texas $4.2 billion in economic damage, as estimated by Waco-based Perryman Group, but it’s been great for business in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, a border crossing just across state lines from El Paso.  Source: Texas Gov. Tudo

Será difícil de dizer:

a palavra real

nunca é suave.

Tudo será duro:

luz impiedosa

excessiva vivência

consciência demais do ser:

Tudo será

capaz de ferir. Será

agressivamente real.

Tão real que nos despedaça.

Não há piedade nos signos

e nem no amor: o ser

é excessivamente lúcido

e a palavras é densa e nos fere.

( Toda palavra é crueldade.)

New York City Enters Higher Coronavirus Risk Level as Case Numbers Rise – The New York Times

New York City entered a higher risk level for the coronavirus on Monday, a troubling reminder that the pandemic is not over and that the virus still has the power to harm New Yorkers.

The city moved into the medium, or yellow, risk category for virus transmission as cases continued their steady rise, a development that could trigger the return of public health restrictions, although they are not required to be reinstated at this point.

The city is now seeing nearly 2,500 new cases per day, a significant jump from about 600 daily cases in early March. The latest rise, fueled by the highly contagious Omicron subvariant known as BA.2, does not rival the first Omicron surge in December and January, but recorded case levels are as high as they were when the Delta variant swept through the city last year.

What’s more, case levels in New York and around the country are probably much higher than the official statistics because many residents are testing at home, and positive at-home tests are not typically included in official tallies.
