Disaster preparedness in Jamaica: Are we becoming complacent?

Petchary's Blog

We are just two weeks away from the official start of the 2022 Hurricane Season (June 1). I have noted a few news items this month (which is Hurricane Preparedness Month in the U.S., but regrettably not in Jamaica) – as follows:

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), the primary Government agency responsible, has mold (very visible) right through its head office. Does everyone have to move out? This was first reported two years ago, according to TVJ. ODPEM’s management and the relevant Minister of Local Government that is responsible for this agency did not respond to calls. Has ODPEM been sidelined? Why is it so quiet? Six years ago, the former head of the agency, Dr. Barbara Carby, suggested that it had been sidelined as Hurricane Matthew approached, and largely useless information had been dished out by politicians. Has anything changed? Who is in charge of…

Lemon Berry Cheesecake

snapshotsincursive

What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Fab Foodstuff: Lemon Berry Cheesecake! There’s something about lemon that makes your head spin, especially on a hot summer day. It might be the refreshing burst of citrus that seems to hydrate the senses. Or it could be the charm of living in the South that makes it incredibly desirable. Perhaps you’re just a sweet-tart kinda soul. Whatever the reason, add a little berry to the mix and it feels like a party. Because time may be a factor, I began with a prepared cake mix. The rest is pure magic.

Some Stray Thoughts…on Life

Kaushal Kishore

Many times
what we see is
not what it really is
and what it really is
is not what it looks like…

But we always want to see
what we wish to see
and when we are not able to see
the mismatch gives rise
to a series of mistakes
falling prey to misunderstandings
that get further inflamed
when one is unable to speak mind
and the other can’t understand it
properly…

The mind quickly gets entangled
in a spider’s web
with thoughts and thoughts
about the past moments
of despair and discords
leading to frustration and disconnect…

We remain the same
our paths and relationships
also don’t undergo any change
but what changes are
our own feeling and attitude…

The biggest mistake of our life
is that we don’t learn anything
from our own or others’ mistakes…

We must look back to understand life
and look ahead to live…
