‘We’re flying blind now’ Kremlin infighting and the war in Ukraine will determine if Putin cancels Russia’s elections in September, sources tell Meduza — Meduza
On May 17, lawmakers in the State Duma discussed the possibility of cancelling both gubernatorial and regional and municipal elections scheduled for September 11, 2022. The stated reason is the need to support the president unanimously during Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine. Meduza special correspondent Andrey Pertsev learned that Vladimir Putin has yet to reach a final decision about postponing the elections, but the Federal Security Service and National Security Council are lobbying hard to convince him that it’s crucial.

FDA Announces Plans To Ease The Shortage Of Baby Formula | LAist
“Our new guidance streamlines the ability for companies, including those that do not normally sell infant formula in this country, to make products available to the U.S. market.”
Califf said these flexibilities will mean “additional products can quickly hit U.S. stores.”
“We are casting a broad net,” said Susan Mayne, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. “We are seeking manufacturers around the globe who may have available product that could meet our standards for both nutrition and food safety.”
She said the FDA will help get that product into the United States.
The FDA is also allowing more flexibility for infant formula produced in the United States. Priority will be given to manufacturers that can demonstrate safety and nutritional adequacy and that can get product onto U.S. shelves the quickest.
“We are focused on getting as much product as possible on store shelves,” said Frank Yiannas, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food policy and response.

Jardim florido

Um aroma intenso
Uma breve carícia
Um sorriso tímido
Uma mão permissiva
Um gesto desajeitado
Uma saudade levada pelo vento
Um retrato roubado
Um suspiro
Um alento
O sol num dia de Primavera
As flores no meu jardim
Estou aqui à tua espera
Será que vais chegar por fim?
Ah, quem me dera!

Western US May Be Experiencing Its Worst Dry Spell in 12 Centuries – Mother Jones
Shrinking snowpacks, parched topsoil and depleted reservoirs are symptoms of the West’s longest continuous streak of dry years since 800 AD. There is also a significant likelihood the streak continues. A study published in Nature Climate Change in February predicted a 94 percent chance the drought stretches through 2023; the chances of it persisting through 2030 are 75 percent, when factoring in continued impacts of a warming climate.
According to the US Drought Monitor, most of the West is in “moderate” to “severe drought.” Certain regions, like eastern and southwestern Oregon, California’s Central Valley, southern Nevada and eastern New Mexico are in “extreme” to “exceptional” drought.

Study finds mysterious DDT chemicals in California condors – Los Angeles Times
This latest study builds on much-needed research into DDT’s toxic — and insidious — legacy in California. Public calls for action have intensified since The Times reported that the nation’s largest manufacturer of this pesticide once dumped its waste into the deep ocean. As many as half a million barrels could still be underwater today, according to old records and a UC Santa Barbara study that provided the first real glimpse of this pollution bubbling 3,000 feet under the sea near Catalina Island.
