A Few Mini Snippets To Start The Weekend!

Filosofa's Word

Just a few very short snippets de snark today – I’m trying to clear out the detritus from my mind before the start of a 3-day weekend!  Speaking of which … to all my friends in the U.S., be safe and sensible this weekend, okay?  I really don’t want to read about drunken driver crashes or other tragedies because someone felt the need to celebrate a bit too much.

Want to know just how low the GOP is willing to go?  Look no further than the state of Michigan, where the Republican Party is trying so hard to unseat the current Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer.  There were initially ten GOP candidates for the position, but five were disqualified in one swoop yesterday when it was discovered that their nominating petitions contained thousands of forged signatures.  Thousands, not a few hundred, but thousands … of forged signatures.  In other words, they…

More one friday- parte 2

Coisas da SIL

More one friday.
Eu sigo tentando…aprendendo sempre, porque a vida é dinâmica.  Por: Coisas da SiL

Rose – edelste aller Blumen

Review: Purgatoire Des Innocents, Empathy for Heroic Thieves, and Speaking for Those Who Cannot Speak

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

Purgatoire des innocentsPurgatoire des innocents by Karine Giébel
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

(English after French…)

Honte d’avoir survécu, haine contre soi même de n’avoir pas su se protéger, envie abandonner. Effrayant, vachement important à lire.

-Addendum:  This book features an unlikely pair of heroes:  two brothers who go from jewelry theft to saving a young girl’s life, at their own horrific expense, as they repair their sins by stopping an even worse person (mostly) from killing an innocent.  But their suffering is not quite enough for a system that lacks empathy.  Here is the original review:

Guilt for surviving, self-hated for being unable to protect yourself, just wanting to give up. Gut-wrenching, horrifically important to read.

Do Better: Can Time Bank Currencies Help?

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This section essentially repeats from earlier, even though it is important:  I suspect that most readers will be more annoyed than happy with the repetition.  Given the difficulty in starting and running a scrip based currency like Ithaca Hours, and the greater level of transparency and stake-holder governance participation in Time Bank decision-making regarding issuance of the currencies, I think that Time Dollars, or Hours, would be more helpful, but having all volunteers join a Time Bank that could share its hours across other Time Banks in the country was not easy some years ago, and may still not be worth the effort.  It will be up to those in place at that time to decide.

Phase IV will build new tools with a US twist, modifying tools introduced in Phase III. As a local means of facilitating the work, communities may choose to…

Uvalde, Texas School Shooting: Live Updates and News – The New York Times

In a tense and at times emotional news conference outside of Robb Elementary School, a top Texas state police official acknowledged that the decision by local police officers on the scene of the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, not to breach the classroom for more than an hour as the rampage was taking place was “the wrong decision.”

“Obviously, based on the information we have, there were children in that classroom that were still at risk,” said Steven C. McCraw, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety. “From the benefit of hindsight where I’m sitting now, of course it was not the right decision. It was the wrong decision. Period.”

We know what the problem is (easy access to guns)

America is reeling from yet another devastating spate of mass shootings. In the last 10 days, shooters have targeted a Taiwanese church in California, a grocery store in a Black neighborhood in New York, and an elementary school in Texas. Although opponents of sensible gun control—the kind that prevails throughout most of the civilized world—continue to put the spotlight on the shooters’ motivations or unstable mental states, these are cynical diversions from the one obvious truth: The common thread in all of the country’s revolting mass shootings is the absurdly easy access to guns. The science is clear: Restrictions work, and it’s likely that even more limitations would save thousands of lives. So why not take the laws much further, as other countries have done? The alternative is painfully obvious—living with more and more senseless carnage, courtesy of the National Rifle Association and their well-funded political lackeys.
