Multiple people were shot at a medical building in Tulsa, Oklahoma : NPR (four dead – includes shooter suicide)

Tulsa police have confirmed that three people were killed by a shooter who then took his own life at the Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., on Wednesday.

“We can confirm 4 people are deceased, including the shooter, in the active shooting situation at St. Francis hospital campus. Officers are still clearing the building. More info to follow,” Tulsa police tweeted.

Tulsa police said in a Facebook post just before 6 p.m. that the shooter was dead. It was unclear how the shooter died.

“Officers are currently going through every room in the building checking for additional threats,” police said at the time. “We know there are multiple injuries, and potentially multiple casualties.”

Tulsa police Capt. Richard Meulenberg said multiple people were wounded; he called it a “catastrophic scene.”

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

Yet another removal from Chapter Six as redundant:

To build very small condos, eradicate hunger, and distribute basic life necessities to each newborn citizen and even resident, would not be very difficult, from a production, distribution, and resources perspective. We already have more than enough of each to provide several shelters, and abundant food to each person in the US. That is not the difficulty. The reason that we will need from fifteen to twenty years to arrange all of this new housing, food, and water distribution, in the nation with the largest GDP on earth, is the logistical and cultural work needed to make this possible.  Given the amount of food thrown out simply after purchase, let alone before arriving at market, simple rice, beans and greens for each local resident should take far less time to organize. Finding or building a room for each newborn citizen…

Writing Process: Removing a Darling Comment

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

Volunteering can be most difficult in health settings.   This is part of what Phase II will help build,  Escorts starting about 15-20 years from now as Phase I draws to a close, by building a cadre of Serving Adults (and here is the comment I removed):

A timeline for building support for a robust public health system could run as long as the generation currently in charge of funding the system, but that is time we do not have.

So, I continue to work on draft #6 Project Do Better’s manifesto,

WHO says monkeypox has been spreading undetected as global cases rise to more than 550

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the sudden appearance of monkeypox in multiple countries across the world indicates the virus has been spreading undetected for some time outside the West and Central African nations where it is usually found.

The virus may have been transmitted for months or years undetected though investigations are ongoing and there are clear no answers yet, according to Dr. Rosamund Lewis, the WHO’s monkeypox technical lead.

“We don’t really know whether it’s too late to contain. What WHO and all member states are trying to do is prevent onward spread,” Lewis said during a news conference in Geneva on Wednesday. Contact tracing and isolating patients who have monkeypox are crucial to stopping the spread, she said.

EDITORIAL: 2nd Forest Service blunder makes clear who’s responsible – New Mexico fires

Las Vegas Mayor Louie Trujillo says it was a “mindblow” that forest officials started the Hermits Peak Fire via a controlled burn gone wrong on a windy day in early April. Learning last week the Calf Canyon Fire erupted after a U.S. Forest Service “sleeper fire” in January was a second mindblow to the mayor and others.

We now know the Forest Service caused both the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon fires, which have merged in the Las Vegas area to become the largest wildfire in state history.

Mayor Trujillo, who lost a second home in Pendaries Village and a family cabin in Gallinas, called the news “shocking,” “impactful” and “disconcerting.” That’s why an independent investigation is essential to determine whether protocols were followed, and if so, how those protocols should be changed.

We hope the governor, attorney general and congressional delegation are on this. New Mexicans need to know how the federal agency responsible for managing 20 million acres of forest and grasslands in New Mexico and Arizona, 2,750 miles of streams, 37,900 acres of lakes and 25% of New Mexico’s fishing habitat could appear so incompetent

“… It also makes me wonder if the federal government should step forward and make it good,” Trujillo says.

Yes, and in no uncertain terms.

The Calf Canyon Fire was the result of a Forest Service “pile fire” that was ignited in January and continued to burn underground until it reignited above ground on April 9. The “pile” was made up of natural debris the Forest Service had cleared from an area. Days before, the Hermits Peak Fire escaped containment. Both were initially Forest Service “controlled” burns, leading agency head Randy Moore to put a 90-day pause on prescribed burns across the nation starting May 20.

Increased COVID-19 numbers raise concerns for the summer

Health officials in North Carolina say the state is seeing a rise in the percentage of people who test positive for the virus.

“Last year from May 1st to May 31st, our positive rate was 8%. This year, our positive rate is 25%,” Dr. Arin Piramzadian, StarMed Healthcare chief medical officer said.

The increase in cases has led some Eastern Carolina businesses to request that people wear masks indoors again.

“Keeping a policy that helps us out and helps our customers… some of our customers are older, and some, they have some other illnesses and stuff like that,” Jean Wagnac, Ann-G’s Hair Studio co-owner said.
