Monkeypox: Why I Haven’t Written about It
Frankly, while it’s in the news, a snippet from a recent WHO report is worth noting:
The sudden and unexpected appearance of monkeypox simultaneously in several non-endemic countries suggests that there might have been undetected transmission for some unknown duration of time followed by recent amplifier events.
World Health Organization
Monkeypox was first identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1970. As a lesser cousin of the more serious smallpox disease, it didn’t receive the attention that smallpox did. There was no push to eradicate it as was done with smallpox, and there is no rapid test to determine whether someone has Monkeypox. It simply hasn’t been studied.
For that reason, we really don’t know how many people in Europe or the Americas have had this disease. Covid-era tests for sexually-transmitted diseases are starting to flag this virus, but most people never get those tests. Could other people…

Jolly Monday … With BACON!
Good Monday morn, my friends. The first Monday in June. My darling daughter reminded me this past weekend that we are almost half the way back to Christmas. I told her to shut up. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and you’re all revived and refreshed, ready to start another fun week at work! Well, Jolly and Joyful have been working all weekend on gathering fun ‘toons, memes, and more for your Monday morning dose of humour to start the week out with a grin, a smile, or maybe even a chuckle. And Joyful has a few treats, so let’s go find out what she’s made this week, and then we’ll head off to find some fun!
First, I came across these memes that seem to have been made just for our bacon lovers, so while you’re munching your crispy slices this morning, take a look at these…

Writing Process: 6th Draft in Final Edit, Beta Readers Needed!!
Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better
At last! I’ve just finished Draft 5, and am now in final edit of the substantially revised Draft #6, which is rather different, even, from the 5th draft. Now in need of Beta Readers, please! In addition to a few idea changes, this draft is 237 pages, rather than the 288 of draft 5. (why is the editor so snaggy today?!)
So, I continue to work on detail edits of draft #6 of Project Do Better’s manifesto, which should not be many as I was careful, but one always misses something, so do let me know of any and everything you see or think should be changed -just let me know if you want to read this 6th Draft and I will post it!
I look forward to hearing your opinions, Thoughtful Readers.
We can really Do Better.
-Shira

Boris Johnson survives no-confidence vote to remain U.K. prime minister – The Washington Post
Surviving a no-confidence vote under the current rules insulates Johnson from additional party challenges for a year. But those rules can be changed.
Looming over Monday’s vote was the recollection that Johnson’s predecessor, Theresa May, beat a no-confidence challenge over her failed Brexit deal in 2018, only to be forced to resign the next year. When May faced her vote, 37 percent of her lawmakers voted against her; Johnson did worse, with 41 percent of his lawmakers voting against him.
In opinion surveys, Johnson’s polling numbers are in the dumpster after months of drip-drip revelations about how he allowed his staff to turn his office and residence of 10 Downing Street into an ersatz frat house during the darkest days of the pandemic — with “BYOB” party invites, karaoke singing, fisticuffs and vomiting.
Johnson was booed by some when he attended a jubilee service on Friday at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Los Banos part 2
Today is the 6th of June – D-Day in Europe, 1944.
Los Banos depicted by: Mariusz Kozik
First Lt. John Ringler was in charge of those troopers who would drop 900 yards from the camp. They made their jump at approx. 500 feet instead of the usual 700-1,000′ since the drop zone was so small and the men would have less exposure time. They made three V’s-in-trail by the nine Douglas C-47s from the 65th Troop Carrier Squadron/ 54th Troop Carrier Group/5th Air Force. Some of the men ran across open fields to achieve their assigned positions. Ringler and his company went down a riverbed from the northeast (photo) while others came from the south and southeast.
Major Burgess went across Laguna de Bay with the amphibious vehicles as the main attacking force. The noisy amtracs slowly made their progress to shore with hopes the enemy had not heard their arrival. Once on the beach, the 457th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion…

54 years ago… In Memory of Bobby Kennedy.
Gone but the dream lives.
I’ll never forget watching just after midnight that victory speech from California. I’ll never forget watching the next night when Frank Mankiewicz announced that Bobby had died. I’ll never forget watching all the days and nights following.
I’ll never forget at 11 years old the day my childhood ended.
I’ll never forget losing my Hero.
At 65 I still ask “WHY” and cry.
One by one they murdered all of our Hero’s.
Open wounds that have never healed and a country that to this day has never recovered.
This country would not became what it is today if these men had not been murdered.
On this June 6th,
Never forgotten Bobby, never ever forgotten.
Hero then, Hero now, Hero Forever.
Coupgate? Trumpgate?
Can we find a new mime for national political crimes/scandals? “Gate” was 50 years ago.
This week will begin the televised hearings of the January 6th committee and while I’m not holding my breath, I am hopeful that the American public will at least be convinced of one thing: Donald Trump is a crook, a criminal, who attempted a coup to overturn the U.S. election in 2020 and can NEVER be allowed to hold public office again. Robert Reich gives us a comparison to another set of televised hearings 49 years ago … all the news then, but Watergate pales in comparison to what happened on January 6th 2020.
The Week Ahead: Why everything depends on Liz Cheney
Forty-nine years ago, Howard Baker had a similar responsibility — but hers will be far more challenging
The televised hearings of the House Select Committee on the January 6 insurrection, which begin Thursday, mark an historic milestone in the battle between democracy and…

Nesta cruel masmorra tenebrosa
…ainda vendo estou teus olhos belos,
a testa formosa,
os dentes nevados,
os negros cabelos.
Vejo Marília, sim; e vejo ainda
a chusma dos Cupidos, que pendentes
dessa boca linda,
nos ares espalham
suspiros ardentes.
