Avian Flu Diary: CDC Investigation: Multi-State Outbreak Of Salmonella infections Linked To Poultry Contact

Key points:

  • CDC and public health officials in several states are investigating multistate outbreaks of Salmonella infections linked to contact with backyard poultry.
  • In total, 219 illnesses have been reported from 38 states, and 27 people have been hospitalized.
  • One in four sick people are children younger than 5 years.
  • One death has been reported from Tennessee.
  • The true number of sick people is likely much higher than the reported number, as many people recover without medical care and are not tested for Salmonella.
  • Backyard poultry can carry Salmonella germs even if they look healthy and clean. These germs can easily spread in areas where the poultry live and roam.
  • These outbreaks occur annually and coincide with the increase in baby poultry purchases, beginning in the spring. Last year in 2021, a total of 1,135 people got sick from contact with backyard poultry.
  • These Salmonella outbreaks are not related to recent cases of H5N1 bird flu viruses detected in U.S. wild birds and poultry. However, backyard poultry owners should be aware that the steps needed to stay healthy around their flocks are similar for both diseases.

♫ Summer of ’69 ♫ (Redux)

Filosofa's Word

I first played this one just over a year ago, but I am reduxing tonight because … I promised our friend Clive that I would find one he likes better than the one I played yesterday.  I remembered that this was one that he liked, so … this one’s for you, Clive!

I have a double reason for playing this one tonight … nay, a triple reason!  One is our friend Keith Wilson who said, speaking of Bryan Adams, “‘Summer of ’69’ is probably my favorite of his because it seems autobiographical.”  Two is our friend Clive who, also speaking of Bryan Adams, said, “My favourites of his are ‘Summer Of ‘69’ and ‘Run To You’, not that you were asking 😉  And third, I rather like this song … if I didn’t, I wouldn’t likely play it here.

Typically, I get most of the trivia and…

(2) Watch live: Thousands rally against gun violence at March for Our Lives protest in Washington, DC – YouTube

Up to 50,000 protesters were expected in Washington, D.C., for a march against gun violence, according to a permit from the National Park Service. Several hundred marches were planned across the country, including in New York City, Las Vegas and Chicago. It marks the latest widespread move by March for Our Lives, which was founded by teens after 17 people were killed in a shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. That year, the group rallied more than 1 million people in the nation’s capital and hosted sister rallies around the country and world, ramping up public pressure to change gun laws that – four years later – have largely still not been addressed.

Parashat Nasso, & Rituals vs. Status

Context, Thought, and Learning: ShiraDest Offers Project Do Better

This week’s Torah portion, Parashat Nasso,  is the 35th (35/54 or 52, depending on the year: this year, 5782, we read 54 separate parshiot…) reading in the annual cycle, and the second parashah in the book of B’midbar/Numbers.   This parshah is also the longest parashah in the Torah (no, I have no idea why the rabbis chose to organize it this way, except that in the summer, those long days were more suited, probably, to studying the readings…).

So, this week, readers of the full Annual Cycle for this portion (are there any Masorti/Conservative movement shuls still on the annual cycle?) will encounter a variety of odd, possibly even abusive, rituals, like the famous Sotah, vs. the Priestly Blessing (Duchaning), and more gifts to the hierarchy.  An innocent woman could be subjected to the ritual of Sotah merely upon the whim of a jealous husband, on the…

Sonhos

Pensamentos.me/VEM comigo!

More pressure on Myanmar needed via a combination of ways: Saifuddin

There is a need to put more pressure on the military authority in Myanmar to resolve the current crisis and it should be done through a “combination of ways”, said Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah.

Speaking on the topic titled “Myanmar: Finding A Way Forward” at a Plenary Session of The 19th Shangri-La Dialogue today, Saifuddin said one of the ways “is to talk to people whom the Junta would want to listen (to).”

“We have to also try that area; and if the Junta is not going to listen to any one of us from Asean, then we have to look at Asean Dialogue Partners that the Junta may want to listen to,” he added.
