Got Leftover/Failed Cake Crumbs? Make Some Trifle! — Tanooki Homemade Cafe

Tomorrow is National Strawberry Day, so how about grabbing some fresh, gorgeous looking strawberries from the market(or possibly u-pick farm!) and spending some time in the kitchen on this upcoming weekend? It’s supposed to be cooler than the past few days in my local area(although I don’t know if it’s true…the sun is trying to […]

Covid: UK infections continuing to rise – BBC News (Me: Pretending Covid is done another Boris failure!)
The data suggests around 1.7 million people were estimated to have Covid in the week ending 18 June.
This is around one in 35 people – an increase of 23% on the week before.
Experts say two new fast-spreading subvariants of Omicron – called BA.4 and BA.5 – are likely to be driving new infections.
BA.4 and BA.5 now make up more than half of new Covid infections in England, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says.
UKHSA officials expect more people to test positive in the next few weeks.
People can catch the newer variants even if they have had coronavirus recently.
Roe v. Wade overturned by Supreme Court, ending federal abortion rights (Me: No words right now for this cruelty)
- The Supreme Court in a 6-3 decision overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that established the constitutional right to abortion.
- Roe since 1973 had permitted abortions during the first two trimesters of pregnancy in the United States.
- Almost half the states are expected to outlaw or severely restrict abortion as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision on a Mississippi case known as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
- Justice Samuel Alito wrote the majority opinion. The court’s other five conservatives, including Chief Justice John Roberts, joined in the judgment, which was opposed by the three liberal justices.

Study proves: women are less credited in science than men – Mágica Mistura 車
Being a scientist is a more difficult task for women – and not just because of the double workday (science added to household chores), the harassment and prejudice they face. Scientists have to do significantly harder to recognize their contributions, and are often overlooked in the studies in which they participate.
THE gender inequality in science it is not new, of course. But it was necessary to put the difference on the tip of the pencil and understand its raison d’être. “We have known for a long time that women publish [scientific articles] and patent [inventions] at a lower rate than men, ”says Julia Lane of New York University, co-author of a study on who receives credit for scientific projects and who does not.

Presto, Pesto
What’s Cooking in Gail’s Kitchen? Start Smart: Presto, Pesto! The garden went wild this year with an abundance of basil. I mean, you can only dry so much. Granted, I happen to like fresh basil with anything tomato, but not everyone agrees. So, this time I threw together a couple cups of basil leaves with my favorite pairing: parmesan cheese! Pesto freezes well, so it can be stored in an airtight container, or initially, ice cube trays. Once it’s frozen, transfer the cubes to airtight freezer bags for later on. Always defrost in advance. Pesto tastes best served at room temperature or only slightly warmed. Keep in mind, a little goes a long way. Mix it into salad dressing or guacamole; the olive oil creates a smooth texture. Add a dollop to your evening vegetables, pasta noodles, or meat dish. Get creative and go Pesto!

Senate sends school meal waiver bill back to House with some changes : NPR (Me: Senate GOP would still rather let some children go hungry…)
Senate Agriculture Chair and bill sponsor Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., told NPR that there would have never been 10 Republican members in support of extending all the free meals. The eventual compromise to return to pre-pandemic meal categories was necessary to make sure schools received other necessary assistance.
“We aren’t completely back to normal as it relates to the pandemic,” Stabenow said, noting that school are still facing high food costs and supply chain disruptions. “Up to one-third of the schools may not have been able to provide school meals at all without [any waivers].”
What’s being waived?
Before the pandemic, federal laws required schools meet specific nutrition requirements that governed what they could and could not serve students. They had to serve their meals in “congregate” settings, like a cafeteria or a park. Families had to meet income requirements to receive free or reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Program. And in the summer, only areas that had 50% of kids qualifying for free or reduced-priced meals can operate a summer meal program.
Those rules went out the window during the pandemic.
“[Waivers] really provided a lifeline, because in a lot of rural and suburban communities, poverty is so widely dispersed over large geographies,” said Jillien Meier, director of partnerships and campaign strategies at No Kid Hungry. “So even if 49% of your kids in your community qualifies for free or reduced price meals under the National School Lunch Program, you can’t operate an open summer meal site.”
The school meal waivers allowed for students to grab lunches to-go and or be delivered via school buses.
