The Supreme Court Just Expanded States’ Power to Prosecute Crimes on Tribal Land – Mother Jones (Me: Hands off, it’s their land!)

Neil Gorsuch, who was joined by the three liberal justice in his dissent, wrote that when the Cherokee were exiled to Oklahoma, they were promised that they would be free from state interference. “Where this Court once stood firm, today it wilts,” Gorsuch wrote. “Where our predecessors refused to participate in one State’s unlawful power grab at the expense of the Cherokee, today’s Court accedes to another’s.”

Big Shock in Big Bend – The Rio Grande Dries Up

Tall canyon walls stretch to either side of the dry, cracked riverbed of the Rio Grande. Tewo people can be seen in the distance walking along it.
WHAT’S MISSING FROM THIS PICTURE? THE RIO GRANDE RUNS DRY AT SANTA ELENA CANYON DYLAN BADDOUR/TEXAS OBSERVER

It’s a grim warning sign for the lower reaches of the Rio Grande, which provide water to millions of acres of crops and to many people in Texas and Mexico. The river has dried up in other spots off and on for decades now, battered by drought and overuse, but never in these places. No one alive has seen the river as it looks today.

Avian Flu Diary: CDC Opens EOC for Monkeypox Response – HHS Unveils Targeted Vaccine Plan

Today, CDC continues to lean forward with an aggressive public health response to the monkeypox outbreak by activating its Emergency Operations Center (EOC). This action stands up the CDC’s command center for monitoring and coordinating the emergency response to monkeypox and mobilizing additional CDC personnel and resources. CDC’s activation of the EOC allows the agency to further increase operational support for the response to meet the outbreak’s evolving challenges. It is home to more than 300 CDC staff working in collaboration with local, national, and international response partners on public health challenges. The activation of the EOC will serve to further supplement the ongoing work of CDC staff to respond to this outbreak. Global COVID cases rise as BA.4 and BA.5 expand | CIDRAP

COVID-19 cases jumped 18% last week and are at their highest levels since April, and the increase comes as the more transmissible Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants cause most infections, the World Health Organization (WHO) said today in its latest update.

BA.4, BA.5 make up 55% of global samples

Four of the six WHO regions saw rises last week: the Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Americas. Globally, deaths stayed level, but were up in the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asian, and Americas regions.

US rolls out monkeypox vaccine plan… | CIDRAP

Under the new plan, 296,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine will be made available throughout July, 56,000 of which will be allocated immediately.

Over the coming months a combined 1.6 million additional doses will become available, the administration said. The vaccines will be distributed equitably to states based on population, and at-risk communities will be targeted in the vaccination campaign.

“This includes those who had close physical contact with someone diagnosed with monkeypox, those who know their sexual partner was diagnosed with monkeypox, and men who have sex with men who have recently had multiple sex partners in a venue where there was known to be monkeypox or in an area where monkeypox is spreading,” the White House said in an HHS press release.

“While monkeypox poses minimal risk to most Americans, we are doing everything we can to offer vaccines to those at high-risk of contracting the virus. This new strategy allows us to maximize the supply of currently available vaccines and reach those who are most vulnerable to the current outbreak,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra.

Officials said they now have the capacity to test 10,000 Americans per week for the virus now that five major labs are authorized to conduct tests.

Aqui eu sinto
O vento que me arrepia.
O barulho que me anima.
O eco do quero quero.
As folhas que se batem
Umas nas outras
Os cachorros que alarde

O barulho que embrulha
A saudade de quem fala.
O destino que vem chegar
Ou possa passar.

O bom que sempre Vem
A maldade que fala de alguém.

A mata traz o verde
Da esperança que não cansa
Das lembranças do tempo bom
De um certa distante
Que não se prolonga.

Uma chuva que cai e sempre vai embora
Que molha a terra e se acorda
Um novo fim, novo dia, nova sina

Assim chega…
Silenciosa
Harmoniosa
Cheirosa
E saborosa.

here I feel
The wind that chills me.
The noise that cheers me up.
The echo of want want.
The leaves that beat
each other
the dogs that flaunt

The noise that wraps
The longing…
