Judge blocks Arizona law granting ‘personhood’ to fetuses, embryos – UPI.com

A federal judge in Arizona has temporarily blocked a state law that grants so-called personhood rights to fetuses, embryos and fertilized eggs, stating it is unconstitutionally vague.

U.S. District Court Judge Douglas Rayes ruled Monday against the state’s Interpretation Policy on the grounds that it is “intolerably vague,” preventing healthcare professionals from knowing if they are breaking state law by providing abortion care.

Justice Department Taps Oregon Official to Run Troubled Bureau of Prisons – The New York Times

Colette S. Peters, the longtime director of the Oregon Department of Corrections, has been tapped to lead the chronically mismanaged and understaffed federal Bureau of Prisons, according to two people familiar with the decision.

The Justice Department, which oversees the bureau, is expected to announce her appointment this week, perhaps as early as Tuesday. The bureau, a sprawling network of 122 facilities with an annual budget of around $10 billion, houses about 158,000 inmates.

The appointment comes after a long search to replace the current director, Michael Carvajal, who announced his intention to retire in January, under pressure from Senate Democrats who questioned his management.

Spreading the Word About Environmental Protection Awareness in a New Way — FunWritings

Air Fryer Onion Rings

In Dianes Kitchen

We went to Amish Country a week ago and I bought a bag of onion rings that were already breaded and frozen by the Amish. I hate frying in oil so I put them in the air fryer. I am so glad that I did as they were golden brown, very crispy and delicious.

If your onion rings are frozen, let them thaw completely. Spray the basket of your air fryer with cooking oil. Preheat air fryer to 400º for 5 minutes.

Place a layer of onion rings in the basket. I was too hungry to make them one layer at a time so I balanced them on top of each other so they were barely touching the other onion rings. Liberally spray the onion rings with cooking oil then salt them to taste.

Air fry at 400º for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown then enjoy!

1 in 8 U.S. deaths from 2020 to 2021 came from COVID-19 – leaving millions of relatives reeling from distinctly difficult grief

Our research shows that more than 9 million people have lost a close relative to COVID-19 in the U.S. This dramatic rise in bereavement is troubling because our research finds that COVID-19 bereavement not only increases people’s risk of depression, but can make them uniquely vulnerable to mental distress.

Filosofa's Word

A day or two ago, I played a song from 1972 … I had sort of played that game of “close your eyes, spin the wheel, and wherever your finger is pointing when the wheel stops …” and came up with First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack.  Most of you liked it just fine, but our friend Clive wasn’t all that thrilled with it.  So, I asked him what HE was listening to in 1972, and he mentioned the Eagles first album, so I took yet another stroll down memory lane and … oh yeah, there were some good ones on that album!  Tonight’s song is the first on the album and maybe the best, though I like several of the others as well.  Turns out, this is one of the few songs I don’t seem to have played on my music posts yet, so …

Stunning spread of BA.5 subvariant shows why this California COVID wave is different – Los Angeles Times

Coronavirus case rates have remained at persistently high levels statewide for months, infecting significant numbers of people and snarling business operations .Increasingly, more coronavirus-positive patients are being seen in the hospital.

Over the weeklong period ending Thursday, California reported an average of more than 15,500 new coronavirus cases per day. On a per capita basis, that’s about 278 cases a week for every 100,000 residents. That’s down about 12% compared with the previous week, but officials and experts say the apparent dip could partly be the result of data interruptions over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
