The Unfreedom Monitor is an Advox initiative to deepen our understanding of the relationship between technology and authoritarian power.

In the first phase of this project, researchers working in 11 countries and four key themes conducted analysis of incidents, narratives, and media items, to explain acts of digital authoritarianism and the discourse around them. This research accompanied and supported a briefing paper, case studies by country and theme, and a series of stories.

The analysis is based on Global Voices’ Civic Media Observatory methodology. Researchers identify and track key themes and narrative frames that emerge around events, trends and other phenomena. By using the same method of analysis across countries and thematic contexts, researchers are able to bring comparative power to their work.

It Always Will Be Ukraine

Grounds For Hope

A nation reborn through blood and blisters
With sharp words of truth and metal shields
Golden fields of grains gently whisper
Victory is ours,
Victory is near
Fields are free of vicious weeds.
It always will be Ukraine.
Graceful, holy, and free
Will never be shackled
For her soul is clear,
For her soul is dear,
For her heart is free.
The truth, the unity, the love, and freedom
Are her weapons against the wicked lips
No thoughts, no words, not even weapons
Could blow her down to the oppressor’s feet.
It always will be Ukraine.
Graceful, holy, and free
Will never be shackled
For her soul is clear,
For her soul is dear,
For her heart is free.

Нація, відроджена через кров і пухирі Iз зострими словами правди і металевими щитами. Золоті поля зерна ніжно шепочуть Перемога близько, Перемога за нами Поля вільні від злісних бур’янів. Завжди буде Україна…

Religious Zealot Worker REJECTS Sale Of Condoms To Female Customer

Not based on “faith” but on politics and lack of respect for one another.

Scottie's Playtime

A married woman was refused by a religious Walgreens employee from purchasing a box of condoms, saying that the sale goes against their religious beliefs. If that wasn’t startling enough, Walgreens sided with the employee, saying that there’s a company policy that protects employees from “completing a transaction to which they have a moral objection.” Ana Kasparian discusses on The Young Turks.

“A woman named Jessica Pentz has shared her story of an employee of a Walgreens drugstore refusing to sell her a box of condoms. The employee told her that selling condoms was against his religious beliefs.

In response, a Walgreens spokesperson said that its employees are allowed to “step away from completing a transaction to which they have a moral objection.” The company’s policy has troubling implications considering that the U.S. Supreme Court may soon reconsider its decision guaranteeing people’s rights to contraception.

A Meditation Exercise To Promote Healing

Raffaello Palandri's Blog

Today I want to share with you a simple to try, yet effective meditation exercise, based on hope, to promote healing.

The whole exercise lasts about 10 minutes, and you can do it whenever you feel the need to recenter yourself, or to heal yourself from the negative effects of criticism, fear, rejection, stress, and anxiety.

When you are ready to start, find a safe, calm, and silent place where to meditate, and wear comfortable clothes (or unbutton your tie, trousers, and everything too tight).

Sit comfortably or lie down and start breathing deeply, with your belly, inhaling from your nose and exhaling from your mouth. Your eyes can be both open or closed, as you feel it better.

Enjoy each breath. Appreciate the process of breathing, feel the air entering your lungs and then leaving them. Be thankful and…

A Voice from Iran

“127th story”

First published: Jan.30.2020

It was a Friday and all the high school kids were waiting for the bell to ring. They all were thinking about how to spend their weekend.

Mike walked off school with a hand full of books and looked like he had a cumbersome backpack. His thick glasses were slipping on his nose and he was struggling to carry those extra loads

— Mike’s weird act drew John’s attention. John was a good student with good grades too, but a fun one. While John was secretly staring at Mike, some kids pushed Mike purposely and threw him with all his unnecessary loads on the asphalt.

John couldn’t help it and ran to Mike and helped him pick up his books.

John said: “Dude, are you sure you need all these books over one weekend? You have to bring them back on Monday again. Next time…

Conservatives??? HAH!!! I Think NOT!

Filosofa's Word

As he so often does, Robert Reich hits the nail spot on the head in his take on the term ‘conservative’ as it is used to describe Republicans.  Read on …

How to handle radical Republicans

Stop calling them conservative. And take steps to genuinely conserve America

Robert Reich

July 11

This morning, I heard a commentator allude to “Mitch McConnell and other conservative senators.” Yesterday, a news report described the upcoming Alaska Republican primary as pitting Trump’s “conservative wing against Murkowski’s more moderate base.” I keep seeing references to the “conservative majority” on the Supreme Court.

Can we get real? There is nothing conservative about these so-called “conservatives.” They don’t want to preserve or protect our governing institutions — the core idea of conservatism extending from Edmund Burke to William F. Buckley and Barry Goldwater. They are radicals, intent on wrecking these institutions to impose their ideology on everyone…
