Suella Braverman slammed by parents of cis children over anti-trans comments | openDemocracy (Me: Tories can be trusted to support hate and fear, as well as bullies!)

In an open letter, shared with openDemocracy, the group of parent allies rejected claims that schools who support trans pupils could be acting at odds with the interests of cis peers.

Trans hostility harms all students, trans or not, the letter said, and all children and young people stand to benefit from trans-inclusive practices.

Braverman claimed in her speech, at the Policy Exchange think tank on 10 August, that it is lawful for schools to deadname and misgender trans pupils, and prevent them from accessing toilets, sports teams and dormitories, or wearing uniforms, that match their gender.

Paints made from pollution

Darcy Hitchcock

When you think of states with coal mining, Ohio doesn’t typically come to mind. But old coal mines are leaking a disgusting, acidic iron ore sludge into the rivers, killing life in and along them.

Two professors from Ohio State, an environmental scientist and an art professor, have collaborated to invent a system to clean up the river pollution and use it to make artist-grade paint.

In 2018, alongside local non-profit Rural Action, they partnered with paint company Gamblin to create a limited run of 500 oil paints. They were offered as a reward for supporters of the Kickstarter campaign that funded their research-scale pilot facility. Named the “Reclaimed Earth Colors” set, the paints were popular amongst artists, says Sabraw, allowing them to incorporate an environmentally conscious aspect in their work.

By 2024 they plan to have a full scale system operating in Truetown through their social…

Oregon White Supremacist Pleads Guilty to Hate Crime and False Statement Charges in Connection with Assault of a Black Man | OPA | Department of Justice

In his plea agreement, Smith admitted that, at the time of the assault, he was a member of a white supremacist support group. On Dec. 8, 2018, Smith entered a bar in Lynnwood, Washington, with others, including fellow support group members as well as members of a higher-level white supremacist group. Smith wore clothing and patches indicating his group membership and gave a “Nazi salute” as he entered the bar. While inside, Smith assaulted T.S, a Black man who was serving as the disc jockey at the bar, because he believed that T.S. was being disrespectful to the members of the white supremacist groups. Smith repeatedly punched T.S., while others punched, kicked, and/or stomped on T.S. and called T.S. racial slurs. As a result of the assault, T.S. suffered bodily injuries. Two bystanders attempted to intervene to help T.S. and stop the assault. Both bystanders were assaulted by members of the white supremacist groups, and both sustained injuries.

In addition to the hate crime charge, Smith pleaded guilty to making false statements to FBI agents about circumstances surrounding the assault. Specifically, Smith falsely claimed to the agents that he did not remember anyone calling T.S. a racial slur during the assault. This statement was false, in that Smith knew he and others called T.S. racial slurs before, during and after the assault. Smith made this false statement to the FBI because he wanted to cover up the motive for the assault, which was the bias that he and others had against T.S.’s race.
